For George Cavendish 1st Earl of Burlington, so that his wife and friends could shop safely away from London's impoverished population. It was London's 1st exclusively upmarket covered arcade. The Earl's wife employed widows from the Napoleonic wars to run the shops within it. The superbly dressed Beadles (doormen in top hats and frock coats), were originally drafted in from the Earl's personal army The 10th Royal Hussars, to stop the entrance of pick-pockets and ne'rdowells. The original Georgian rules still apply, these are ; No Spitting No Hurrying or Running No Singing, Humming, Whistling or Shouting No Unfurling of umbrellas And No Boisterous Behaviour. Lovely Tudor Rose carved arches run between groups of glass ceiling windows with central dangling lamps, off set by brightly painted ornate Upper columns. Each shop frontage is wooden giving it a quaint polished old fashioned appearance. And run along either side of the entirety of it's length. Metal balconies adorn some. One end of the arcade is more modern looking without the upper columns. Entrances on Burlington Gardens and Piccadilly. Get your shoes polished by the shoe-shiner, or drop into Laduree for some delicious licorice macaroons.
