I loved the idea of Mindful Chef, as I wanted to prioritise meals with more veggies and less reliance on dairy for flavour. We've had some delicious meals and enjoyed new cuisines. However, after 8 months using Mindful Chef weekly I've stopped our subscription. - A lot of the recipes are spicy, which limits one's choice. Customer Service suggested just not using the spice. So eating e.g. plain rice/meat, despite paying for a premium subscription. - Even when you rate recipes on their website, this doesn't seem to alter the automatic meals they select for you. I've tailored anything I can but unless I manually choose recipes, we get really poor selection. - The spice ratings are very inconsistent (see example below). We've had recipes marked low heat, which were horribly spicy and such marked medium heat, where you couldn't taste any spice even from the packet. - The price is really significant compared to competitors. Quality of ingredients can vary, especially the steaks. Packaging can be wasteful and deliveries unreliable (see example below). - This company is no longer family owned, but disappointingly was bought by Nestle... Examples: 1. We had a missed delivery which meant no dinner that evening, had to order. The box arrived on the next day with DPD and everything in the cold box was spoiled and veggies had wilted a bit. We had to go out and buy ingredients or wait yet another day for a new box. No one suggested bigger refund, apart from the cold box. I'm out of pocket on dinner, wasted time buying ingredients (what was the point of this service again?) and had to figure a different way to cook all 5 meals (we wanted to cook only during the week, other plans for weekend). Mindful Chef didn't even know my delivery was late until contacted. 2. Fast forward during the same week, I'm cooking a recipe and it's NOT marked to be spicy (no peppers next to title). It turned out very spicy, so had to be binned (health reasons) and new dinner ordered. I'm exhausted by having to deal with very basic issues that other competitors simply don't have. Hope this helps someone make an informed choice about recipe boxes. P.s. - Customer services response wasn’t satisfactory, so I’ve taken away a star. Basically, not worth it really.

Not quite the time, labour, or money saver I had hoped for, unfortunately. There was a lot of chopping, slicing, and peeling (darn that butternut squash!), along with the associated mess. My expectation was that the ingredients would be pre-chopped and I would just need to execute the recipe. The actual meal results ranged from good to excellent, and the three I tried were all flavourful. I found the recipes a bit confusing, though; at the bottom it says, "1 makes 2!" and as I had ordered the 1-portion box, it got me wondering whether I should just make half the recipe since I just had one protein unit....but then I thought the whole idea was to make just enough. All in all I can't help but think I could have just as easily gone to the neighborhood market and picked up the ingredients myself. The only ingredient that was a bit quirky and probably not so readily available was the soluble coconut.

Two boxes in and almost everything was smashed and spilled in the box. I had a few interactions with them and eventually they came back and sorted everything out. I have ended up having to go out and replace all the tins, some spices and other packets and an avacado and also sent three different emails and took photos etc. Had they just offered me a refund in the first place I would have rated 5*. Their initial offer was just a credit for a tenner. Once their customer service is all sorted I'm sure it will be excellent. The final guy who helped me was excellent and really helpful, there whole team should be giving service to this level and everything would be great! The recipes and ingredients are good and it's a great idea for vegetarians and people who are gluten free.

For those who was wondering if you want to start a Mindful Chef subscription service, here is some personal experience that you may find helpful to refer to:

Regarding their weekly Subscription Bait:

Please be VERY careful when you start your weekly subscription service, it was a very ‘appealing’ yet misleading concept. So please do read the terms of subscription very carefully before you subscribe, or you might be scammed by receiving a weekly payment deduction from your bank, as once you subscribe, they will randomly send you meals without you ordering anything. And they will inundate you with a bunch of emails that you miss those key information of those random orders, and when you feel scammed and contact their customer service. What you will receive is likely to be a very irresponsible email with a very nice tone yet basically telling you there’s nothing they can do as YOU are the one who is not being careful enough to read their weekly subscription service terms that you subscribe to, and yes, if they claim it that way, and if you sign up randomly as I did, before reading those very nice tailored TERMS, then I’m afraid it would be your fault. So please be careful.

Regarding Packaging:

I urge you to think twice before you order. You will receive a box which every single item inside are HOLISTICALLY wrapped up which is very environmentally unfriendly, but it’s understandable as they need to try their best to ensure the food are not broken, yet I still receive broken eggs, and they was strewn all over the other food, which took me a lot of time to clean. Also how is this consistent with one of mindful chef’s feature, which they claim it to be ’Sustainable & Ethical’, oh yes after you read it carefully they are not wrong, as they did say in the tiny subtitle that it’s only for ‘Ethically-sourced ingredients, zero food waste & less plastic’. But do you know paper bags are not as environmentally friendly either?

Regarding Food Quality:

If you can cook by yourself like me, but was wondering if mindful chef worth a try, personally don’t think it’s worth it. As when you receive meal package, you are likely to find that you’re eating similar things even canned food, like canned lentils, canned tomatoes, as when you look very carefully at each ingredients. It’s not so different. Perfect way to reduce the cost from mindful chef's side.

Regarding their Eat Healthy Concept:

Please do think twice, I wouldn’t buy it if I went over thoroughly again on all their ingredient, I know they are claiming on their official website that they are approved by nutritionists, but I really don’t see how it could be healthy when so much canned food is included when you receive.

Last but not least, I would say the aforementioned are only my personal experience, there should be a reason that they got a 4.8 star on google recommends, which I really do not understand. But please do scroll down to the negative comments as well just to understand it...

The recipes are delicious, they are easy to follow and made using the best ingredients. The Mindful Chef team are always on hand to answer queries quickly, they are great at contacting you. The deliveries have always arrived on time and without any issues. I have been a customer now for about 2.5 months. I have loved the vast majority of the meals I have made and have had few difficulties making them but occasionally I have lacked a required cooking skill and had a vegan dish not turn out quite as intended or perhaps because I have tried something a bit more adventurous that I didn’t quite like. I do think though that I am being introduced to new foods that I have really liked so I am really finding the meals have a very high rate of satisfaction for me, for example never tried Jackfruit and I have repeated some of my favourite receipes of theirs at other times, although the meat suppliers they use are superiority what I can find in the supermarket. I didn’t find cooking enjoyable at all but now I do.

The subscription is very flexible as there are two days which you can order on Fridays or Mondays. You can skip a week or more and you can change how many meals a week you wish to order. There is an abundance of choice and many weeks it is difficult to choose. The ingredients are packaged up and labelled for ease for you. I don’t even bother checking the ingredients list anymore, I have never had an item missing so I just take out one of the bags when I want to start cooking.

The portion sizes are generous, you can for example if ordering for one keep leftovers for lunch. I have now gone to two meals and find that is slightly easier because you don’t need to halve your ingredients.

The team have a very altrusitic approach to business, this is a rare thing and the charity one feeds two is a wonderful idea. The recycling is unbelievably simple, I return all the packaging through my friendly local newsagents. The team are always happy to take on board new ideas or opinions that their customers express. There is a genuine drive towards environmental sustainability and responsibility. They also choose business partners/suppliers with this in mind. It is a rave review because it is unusual to find a company with such a consistently admirable...

I was shocked to learn my credit card was charged £40 for an order that I hadn’t made. Somehow they had charged me for a weekly subscription even though I did not place the order or go to checkout authorise anything. I check my emails very careful due to my work and didn't get the emails they claim either in my inbox or junk box. No emails, didn't go checkout - an elaborate scam of sorts. I don't eat shepherds pie or a fish dish in that sauce, never have. I didn’t expect the company like mindful chef would do this. I immediately contacted them and told them there must be a bug in their system. I can see someone else has posted just this week, so it seems a recent hitch. They told me there wasn’t enough time to cancel and I would have to be charged and accept the food. The The food was fish, shepherd's pie and other dishes which I simply don’t like or eat. Now I sense they have done this deliberately to possibly 1000s of customers to make a quick profit. Lot of inconvenience having to report this as a fraud to your credit card company. Do not leave your details stored with them this is what they do. If more than 40 people report this to trading standards they will be investigated. really disappointed by their response on their error.

I did not activate any subscription, that is utter nonsense. I am not stupid.I don't make mistakes, and not one like this. I did not select shepherds pie or that fish dish, That is ridiculous

I did not get any pop up - at all.

I did not get a single email in any one of my 5 pc locations, or in my junk box.

This is 100% your website bug or done deliberately. I informed you Monday which was sufficient time for you to cancel this for Friday but you don't want to as you want to collect me month and the many thousands who have complained of the same things. Your emails ae not being delivered even if things were done by accident. I placed certain favorites in my basket (selection based on last order some 2-3 years ago) and did not check out. I never had a previous subscription at any time. not even 2 years ago!!

This is an elaborate scam and blatant fraud.

I am shocked why a company like Mindful chef would do this and is a dishonest company, wow!!

I will without hesitate issue proceedings if I do not...
