This was our first stop in Penzance, and on first glimpse, it looks nice, but going to the toilet upstairs and seeing things a bit closer up shows it's in much need of a makeover and repairs.
It's very dated and tiered and looks grubby. Broken tiles and toilet seats and old taps generally look like they're stuck in the 90s sorry to say.
The staff were lovely and the menu was good except we ordered a ham and pineapple pizza and it came out on two bits Ciabatta and the chef didn't tell the staff and just assumed that was acceptable when it wasn't.
We also ordered a sausage for our dog, and that was forgotten also and had to wait for that. He did eat it all when it arrived so that's ok you got his approval.
The staff were very apologetic and took the pizza off the bill but if I hadn't have said anything, as the staff thought I had ordered it to come as it did, may have been charged pizza price, its not that cheap in there either but what we did have was actually good and plentiful.
*It would have been better to tell the waiting staff that pizza wasn't available and give us the option of choosing something else, but hopefully, this will help the communication to be more open between staff and customers in the future.
I know restaurants in Penzance are more seasonal, but I do think they need to spend money on the decor and interior as I doubt we'd go back again, which is a shame but there's better places to experience in Penzance and...
Read moreCame to this restaurant to celebrate our 12th wedding anniversary. We thought it might be popular as it rated highly. I had tried to book a table for two on their website but it told me to ring for that evening. Sadly, no one replied, so we decided we would go along in the evening in case they had a table available. We arrived at 5 and a young lady told us there was a table available and she would reserve for 6.30 when they opened. To start, we had King Prawn with a tandoori flavouring. My wife had seafood tapas with mixed olives, balsamic oil and bread. Both meals were tasty. For main, I had the 8oz sirloin with a peppercorn sauce, chips and ratatouille, my wife had the Turbot on a bed of potatoes. Mine was nice but my wife's fish was rubbery and quite chewy. I tried it also and confirmed that was the case. There was a huge portion of green beans and some samphire. When the waitress came to clear the table, it was obvious that her food was virtually untouched, but she did not ask if all was ok. We then asked for the bill which was over £90 for starter and main. There is also a 10% service charge on the bill. I suspect the fish was previously frozen hence its consistency. We would not return when in...
Read moreAfter reading all the good reviews we had high hopes for this place. Very friendly staff but that’s where the positives stopped, the sharing starter was nice enough although most of the components were out of a jar (olives, sun dried tomatoes etc) so not a lot to get wrong. The mains were where we really felt disappointed. They arrived dry and over cooked with slimy skin. The mackerel came without one of the main components advertised on the menu (salsa) and when asked I was presented with a salsa which tasted remarkably like a cheap jar of Salsa.
Unfortunately if you move around and not for the toilet you get asked to sit back down as we witnessed when another table wanted drinks from the bar. The staff members didn’t come down and check how our mains were and as it had been over an hour since we first arrived we were very hungry. By the time a staff member came down we’d eaten most of the meal but it was one of the worst cooked fish we’ve eaten out. The mackerel was somehow burnt and cold at the same time and the Salmon dry and overcooked. When I complained I received many apologies from the staff but nothing else. Definitely does not live up to the hype, the entire...
