We were really looking forward to visiting this quirky pub but came away feeling extremely disappointed.

We had looked at the website before booking and decided we'd try their pizzas. The menu on the website clearly states "a sample of our regular menu that runs every day except Sunday". I phoned up and booked a table and spoke to a member of staff about ordering pizza for our young (somewhat fussy) toddler, I was told this would be fine. We turned up and the girl who I spoke to handed us our menus and showed us to a table. She did apologise and said she usually works behind the bar. The menus we were given matched the website which was a relief so we ordered our drinks and pizzas. This is where things went downhill.

We were told we couldn't have pizzas because they only serve them on a Monday and Wednesday. Even though they're on the website and the printed menus they gave us with no mention of this. No apology from the girl serving us even though she'd already told us on the phone it wouldn't be a problem. She offered to put our drinks on hold so we could discuss what to do next. As we were discussing what to do the barman turned up with our drinks that were supposed to be on hold! When we explained what had happened his reaction was to say "sorry she forgot we don't do pizza today" as he walked away. We've never walked out of a pub/restaurant before without ordering anything but we did tonight.

Also, when we asked for a highchair we were actually given a very low chair (seemed like part of the legs were detachable and missing) and it was suggested we balance it on the seating benches which seemed somewhat...

Yeah, nice environment, not extortionate on drinks, went there for NYE for reggae night, only thing that let it down was the DJ didn't know any decent reggae songs, we started to sing pass the dutchie and he had no clue 😂 also there was terrible bar staff there just the 1, whilst I was ordering at the bar she put her finger at me and told me to stop talking so she could talk to her colleague, her colleague apologised for her rudeness and attitude.

Edit to respond to the response I've received from the "owner"

Your response lacks professionalism, the fact that I didn't mention the name of the bar staff and you knew exactly who I was speaking about shows that this happens more than often, I was being served by a member of your staff, then your other staff member cut me off to have a conversation about work times, something that could have waited till I was finished being served. I have always been respectful. You obviously can't take criticism, hence why you have just lashed out with a rude and immature response. Having put on numerous events in my time, the DJ, in my opinion, and the majority of the people there thought the same. It was poor.

A very childish and embarrassing response.

edit again Also my Mrs had this nastiest blackest spider crawling across her face, so not the cleanliness...

This establishment first came to my attention through, YouTube, Trains Planes and Everything, featuring Scott Malone. When he drew his viewers to The Admiral Benbow, with his great review. So I just had to go there and I was not disappointed, it was one of my better decisions, for sure. This place, is the quaintanced place I have ever come across. The barman was so welcoming, and the chef, was terrific, I ordered fish and chips, featuring, tartar sauce, garden peas. Cooked to perfection, honestly, the fish just melted in your mouth. The fish wasn't the biggest by any means, but ,I was struggling, just to finish it. The bar had a great choice of beers, wines and spirits The toilets were ground leven, unlike some places where you have to climb 100 steps to heaven. The atmosphere was brilliant with background music to please most tastes. The menu had great variety, meat eaters and vegans alike. Some would say it was past it's sell by date but that's not true. It was full of character. At night it's best to book as I was informed it gets really busy. It's also dog friendly, down side it's a bit on the far...

This is a very entertaining pub in which to enjoy dinner. The place is filled with pirate-like decor unlike nothing I've seen before. I enjoyed the mushroom penne, and decided to splurge for the sticky toffee pudding for dessert. It might be the best I've tried. Delectable! I could easily find a meal that would accommodate my capsicum allergy, unlike a couple of other places where we dined. The waitress was helpful in confirming my choice regarding my allergy. Dinner came quickly, and it's obvious that they do try to move people through the restaurant quickly to seat as many people as possible in an evening. But we never felt rushed. When you book online, you must pay a fee per person that is then subtracted from the total on your bill. The restaurant is located on a charming historic street not far from the promenade. A lovely and safe are to walk around.

An amazing collective mix of maritime memorabilia which makes this place unique and takes you back to a bygone era. However, the staff alone would not make a decision as to whether my son and I could eat, so we had to wait until the Manageress arrived for her shift. The food was good but her manner was more of fish wife as far as speaking to staff! We could hear her swearing and f...ing at the kitchen staff about peas, then when an American couple asked her to recommended one of their English lagers she replied with "we don't like it so we don't serve it, we do stock Czech and German though" they were flabbergasted by her response. We and another family were also surprised that staff didn't know more about the pubs history. Could be a great place if managed better and there was someone on the door to great clients.
