“The Mayflower Steps are close to the site in the Barbican area of Plymouth, south-west England, from which the Pilgrim Fathers are believed to have finally left England aboard the Mayflower on 6 September 1620, before crossing the Atlantic Ocean to settle in North America. The traditional site of their disembarkation in North America is Plymouth Rock.” The steps themselves are not the original ones the Pilgrims left from for North America, in fact the Pilgrims weren’t from Plymouth at all, but rather East Anglia, and when their ship was damaged they had to stop at Plymouth for repairs before leaving from there for their final journey. Nearby is the Mayflower information centre and on the wall of the ice cream shop a list of the Pilgrims themselves.

The steps are used to board local trips into Plymouth Sound and up the River Tamar. The monument is lovely and makes for a great photograph for tourists. The UK 🇬🇧 and USA 🇺🇸 flags stand either side. Worth a visit...

Could not visit Plymouth without taking a look at this memorial, which stands in front of a viewing platform near to the place from where, on 16th September 1620, the Mayflower set sail with 102 Pilgrims on board, families hoping to find a better life and religious freedom in the New World. A bronze artwork tells the story of their experiences on this perilous voyage into the unknown, through illustrations, historical information, and personal accounts. The steps leading down into the water are relatively modern (the original ones no longer exist). There's a museum about the Pilgrims and the Mayflower close by. I did not get time to visit it, but there's a tourist information centre on the ground floor where I found helpful staff, and was given a free map of Plymouth. Well worth coming here to learn about this significant event in British...

With next year being the 400th Anniversary of the Pilgrims setting off from Plymouth. A huge effort is being made to get things done, and in place for our Ocean City's big event. Possible being attended by President Trump. Though stand by for tweets about that happening.🙄 The Barbican is a thriving location filled with history, interesting places to find and friendly locals. I wouldn't want to live any where else. I'm not just saying that because I live here. You would be hard pressed in deed to find anyone who tells a different story. So join us, visit us and check out our fresh air country sights and Sea views. You don't need to wear a mask as you do in smog filled London. Look South West folks,...

Tremendous memorial to commemorate the Pilgrims’ launching site and honor their ordeals on the Mayflower and the New Plymouth colony in America. The stone inscribed with Mayflower 1620 embedded in the pavement looks impressive at the foot of the beautiful stone arbor with UK and US flags on either side. There is a semicircular viewing area behind the arbor overlooking the harbor where the Pilgrims would have descended the steps to board the Mayflower. Across the cobblestone street is the Mayflower Museum for enthusiasts to explore more of the history!

Great place to take pictures and read about the Pilgrim's voyage. A huge misconception is that this is the place where they actually stepped down. This part of the harbor was not even built by 1620, the actual steps are across the Barbican road on Castle Street between two buildings. And there's a black plaque on the side of the Pilgrim's Ice Cream that commemorates all the pilgrims who set sail. That was where the edge of the harbor was back then. All that being said, it is a great Memorial and amazing to see such history in one place.
