It was a busy day, I think it was graduation at the university so there were many families in. So after a 30 minute wait for a table, we decided it was worth it. Mostly ordered pasta dishes with various sides... and I would say all were good and a couple were excellent. The price was reasonable and the atmosphere was great. I think the old fella was the owner, but I'm not sure. He came across a little dismissive and confused, but we'll give him the benefit of the doubt and put that down to how busy it was. Star of the show was our waiter, a Sri Lankan guy who was just so courteous and attentive even though he was so busy. Honestly I'm not sure how he did it as he has a few tables to attend to. The only thing that let this place down was the space, there was nowhere really to wait for our table as there wasn't really any bar space. So we had to wait outside in the rain. So bad first impressions but they did make up for it.

After hearing so much of positive recommendations I had my first visit to the Barbican Pasta bar. I was pretty excited for this meal as two of my friends who dined with them very recently also told me it will be great. So five of us went in to have a nice Italian meal. Restaurant has a different vibe to it in comparison to the other restaurants in the Barbican, a lovely atmosphere to have a nice meal. Although can’t say the same about the service. I ordered the Lamb shank originally and the young waitress (Jiselle) came to me and said that they don’t have lamb, and I politely asked her whether I can get the same dish with chicken. She very rudely pointed the menu at me and asked me what you want from this. I wasn’t sure whether it was her way of talking or whether she was racist at first, so I let it pass even though it really ruined my mood. Then we were waiting for food and I accidentally spilled water on the table, The same waitress looked at me and our table , saw this and looked away and didn’t even bother to bring me some tissues. The other waitress who was attending to another table saw this and she brought me tissues very promptly. It was very kind of her. The food was okay, I wouldn’t say it was extraordinary, but alright. Portion sizes are good and representation was on point. More than the main dishes the desserts were heavenly. Would highly recommend the desserts. After our meal, when we told to bring the bill the young waitress brought the bill and just when we were about to pay I noticed that they’ve charged me for the Lamb shank and not the chicken dish I ended up having. When I pointed this out the waitress very casually said she will get it adjusted, as if it was my fault. Didn’t even bother to say sorry. Two of our friends visited the location just two days ago and two Asian servers had served them and they had a delightful first experience. Due to this experience we decided to go there again. I don’t think any of us will dine here again. Even if the food is great, it is the service that matters. More than anything, I felt a bit of racism in the air by the looks and the treatment we got. Customer service is key, and all customers despite their colour should be treated and greeted the same.

Hopefully this was a one-off experience, but how it has been hailed best Italian in Devon and Cornwall is beyond me. We arrived for our booking at 17:00, and our starters arrived at 17:30 after having a drink, we had ribs and bruchetta to start, which were both good. Starters went back at 17:40, and we were waiting for 20 minutes before I tried to flag down someone for another drink. I didn't actually have anyone come over to me until 18:20 at which point I chased up our mains as it had been 40 minutes since our starters went back. They said they would ask the kitchen about the mains. Then came back, and told me because we ordered starters it was taking longer and essentially our fault... never have I had a resturant tell me they cannot cope with a couple of guests ordering a starter then a main course. The mains eventually arrived at 18:35, 55 minutes after we had our starters plates cleared. No apologies for the delay or even acknowledgement of the wait.. at all. I wouldn't have minded so much if the food we waited for ages for was amazing, but it was OK at best. Given it is called pasta bar, I'd have expected fresh pasta... it was dried pasta. The carbonara was not what any Italian would consider a carbonara. Ultimately, had the service been better, we may have considered giving it another shot. But we wouldn't now.

Absolutely wonderful evening as always at the Barbican Pasta Bar. Amazing food, service and atmosphere. Been coming to this long established family run restaurant for many years, as a couple, as a group and as a family. Tonight dined with the family including 3 children under 5yrs. We were, as always, made to feel very special and most welcome. The children's needs were understood implicitly.. their food was portioned well and served very quickly, while the adults relaxed with excellent chilled wines and the best starters ever, including garlic mushrooms and King prawns. The main dishes of pasta were fabulous, especially the beef bistecca. Succulent beef strips in perfectly cooked pasta. Look no further than this restaurant for a warm welcome and wonderful food. I noticed that they have won several national awards for being top of their game.

We managed to get a last minute booking at 9pm as we had forgotten to book anywhere for a Saturday night! Not the best idea. But greatful they were able to get us in. The staff were lovely, and the atmosphere was great as well. A charming place with delicious food, that is well worth the price! We had spaghetti marinera that was chock full of seafood and a lasagne that was delicious and filling. Both very generous portion sized. The garlic bread was the perfect side dish to mop up all the sauce! Will definitely visit again.

Vegetarians be careful - I ordered the vegetarian cannelloni and was given the meat version instead! If you’re veggie look for the tomatoes on top! Unacceptable, however upon complaint they did apologise and replace it free of charge. However it does raise eyebrows as to how vigilant they are with dietary requirements and allergies. The rest of the party we’re underwhelmed with their meals too which is a shame as this place used to be great 😕 All in all a bit lack lustre and took half an hour to have our order taken.
