So, my girlfriend and I have been coming here since we moved to Glasgow 7 years ago, it was always one of those places where the bar staff never seemed to give a damn and had definitely never been trained. Pints would be short measured, and dumped down in front of you so they spilled everwhere, or worse, would be passed to you by someone using a pincer grip so their fingers were grabbing the drinking edges of the glass, which is just scummy. I stopped ordering whisky there as it always came with ice added, even when I said 'no ice please', I mentioned this I once and the barmaid stuck her fingers into the glass and pull the ice out. Another time when I asked for water for a whisky I had the glass snatched away and then had the glass handed back to me filled to the brim with water. The bar person walked away before I could say anything. We kept on going back as we loved the burgers, we just made sure we ordered drinks that were easy to pour. About a year (plus) ago things changed. The barstaff seemed able to serve drinks and they were polite! This was brilliant we thought, shame it didn't last.
The last time I was here, the barman argued with me over whether a real ale was cloudy or not, when he poured my replacement and it cleared immediately he continued on telling me it might take ten minutes for some beers to clear, I smiled, said thank you and went off to drink the replacement thinking 'Why argue, it's not your profit mate'. The best thing you can do for a business is promote goodwill amongst customers, this encourages repeat custom, and promotes good word of mouth, being petty and vindictive towards your customer just gets poor Google reviews.
So, my girlfriend and I went in today to get a Sunday roast. Over an hour later, it arrived. I was ready to leave after 45mins, but my girlfriend was hungry and didn't want the hassle of trying to get money back. We weren't warned it would take so long, nobody came and checked on us in the meantime and apologised for the wait, nothing. When we got the food we both decided that enough was enough with this place. The food was awful, dry, dry meat, greasy potatoes and veg and the worst part was the braised red cabbage which had so much star anise in it, it flavoured everything on the plate. How do I know there was too much star anise (apart from the flavour), well we both found 2 whole star anise per plate, if was meant as garnish please try something else. We have walked home feeling like we've eaten aniseed balls and have drank a pint of cheap cooking oil. After 7 years of putting up with lots of little niggling doubts about the Curler's Rest we're finally giving up. Don't make our mistake,...
Read moreCome here to be ripped-off and insulted. Visited late afternoon in May. I was drinking the weakest cask bitter that they had. The barmaid served my first pint with a large head on it but did attempt to top it up when asked. The pint still had about 1.5cm head. For my second pint I was served short measure by barman who claimed that a 2cm-3cm head is how he's been trained to pour the beer and so was very reluctant to top it up, though he eventually did reduce the head to about 2cm. For my third pint the barman started arguing about what was an acceptable head before he even started pouring the pint. To add insult to injury he followed me to my table before I'd taken more than a sip and said he would not serve me any more and accused me of being drunk because I had requested a top-up. I had been driving all day prior to visiting the pub and these were my first drinks all day. Response to owner's response: I am saddened by your response because either your staff have problems with their memories and have confused the only time I have visited your pub with a visit by someone else, or you are deliberately misrepresenting the facts in an attempt to discredit my true account of what took place. I was at no time agressive. I was sitting with my 83 year old mother and my 60 year old partner when your barman came over to our table and announced that he would not serve me again himself because I had already had enough to drink. We were all bewildered by his behaviour and my partner asked to speak to the manager. The manager, having listened to us and the barman separately, apologised to us and excused the barman's behaviour by saying he was "new". The manager informed me that there would be absolutely no problem in me continuing to be served. We then finished our drinks and left as we had a table booked for dinner. The most I can be truthfully be accused of is being a pedant because I (politely) corrected the barman on a point of legality regarding the head on a pint of beer. The barman had been aggressive and argumentative when I ordered my third pint. All I did was ask for a glass of wine a soft drink and a pint when he launched into an outburst about what was an acceptable head for a pint. His statements during this outburst showed considerable ignorance of the law or the guidelines of the British Beer & Pub association regarding the head on a pint or the measure that draught beer is to...
