Hate is not a word I like to use. I guess on my 1 star rating, that is exactly what people thought. I have lived in Stockport for most of my life, well since I was 9 years old, quite a while now that I have joined the ranks as a Senior person !!!! The market, shopping precinct has not altered much until this last 4-5 years. I have always been proud of the history within Stockport area. Yes there is a but, Stockport since Redrock emerged has continued to be regenerated and good things are coming to the town to regenerate the area. The thriving market has all but ceased trading. The ghost town of the shopping precinct has emerged. We have one department store left which is teetering on the edge. Yes more events for families have appeared, but it still remains a town less frequented by the people of Stockport. Why, well the parking charges for one are too high, when it rains you have to jump from puddle to puddle, the shop traders moan that the business rents and rates are astronomical. We need a fresh injection of vitality for the high street shops. Come on Counsellors try and repair the uneven pavements, erect some type of a covering to stop us feeling miserable and wet on entry to the shops. The transport interchange is coming, housing is being built. Bring the warmth and northern spirit back into the town by enticing more shops into the main area. What was once a vibrant shopping centre is now a shadow of itself. An almost full half is now effectively closed off due to building work ( what is actually happening to the former stores is anyone's guess) and the opposite side has heras fencing erected with workmen replacing ( yet again) the paving stones so some stores have temporary paving in front of their entrances. Merseyway used to be a busy place, especially on a Saturday, but now, it's no busier than a small highstreet at best. Stockport Council has a lot to answer for by not reacting to the signs of poor footfall and poor building maintenance/management that was obvious to a blind man from 2000 onwards. All the major retailers have more or less pulled out of Merseyway and the companies that have moved into the empty shops appear to be fly by night, short term companies that are almost certain to end up closing down. The council needs to act now and turn the demise on its head and get those major retailers back into Merseyway ( not convert those empty stores into offices, which is one idea they've been floating with). Get the major retailers back and you'll get the footfall back, and in turn, you'll get the income...
