This is where and how, this beautiful tiny city got its name! The Bishops Palace & Gardens are surrounded by high walls and a moat with plenty of swans. Entry through a high archway and a walk past a busy cafe (good plates of food here - no kids menu but my 2 had the fish and chips to share which was perfect) to the gate will gain you entrance. It's £8 to get in, which has gone up since I was last there, but the kids went free (ages 8 and 10). I actually wanted to go to the rare plant fair that was being held on the wide front lawn, but afterwards we went into the gardens. There is an open space with trees, and paths running up along the walls that you can look over to moat and beyond, but if you immediately go left round the side on the Palace, you walk through a planted parterre of euonymous (the box hedges have all been replaced now because of the box moth caterpillar problem) and beautiful trees. The planting was beautiful, lots of flowers still out at this late stage as you can see from the photos. There are lots of statues throughout, one being a large set of crafted metal and white glass wings, which the kids had their photo taken with! Then into the next section, over the water and the swans nesting place. These are where the wells, or underground aquifers, are located, which are deep springs in the ground (Wells is very close to Wookey Hole which is the source of The Axe river in Somerset). Dependent on time of year/whether it has rained a lot in the week previously, sometimes the water actually bulges on the surface of the pools. However, you can easily see how much water is created as it runs through a small lock, down a channel into a waterfall to the moat. The gardens have been planted all around the pools, and with the cathedral rising majestically in the background, it really is a beautiful sight, and well worth a visit.

We held our wedding reception at The Bishop’s Palace in September 2023. From our initial enquiry through to the run up to the day itself, their wedding co-ordinator, Imogen, was always available to answer our questions and for meetings at the palace if we needed to – and for the final arrangements liaised with our band and other suppliers to ensure everyone knew where to be. Imogen also helped with interesting ideas for decoration that would make the most of the palace, and when we thought of things, Imogen had a list of suppliers to suggest where we might source them. We found the venue fun to decorate and found The Bishop’s Palace quite accommodating with our requests and our extensive floristry. We were allowed to dress the venue the day before our event and have suppliers drop off décor we had hired. The recommended caterers, The French Kitchen were flawless and went above-and-beyond our expectations – Ben their events manager worked with Imogen at the Palace to run our day so smoothly, it was sad when it was eventually over. In the weeks since our wedding, we are still receiving comments from our guests saying how wonderful the day was, and how beautiful the venue was. If you are considering the Bishop’s Palace for your wedding reception, we can’t recommend it highly enough.

So glad we made the trek to Wells! A most charming town. The Bishop's Palace and Gardens are definitely worth the tour. The guides are so helpful (they suggested spots for pictures and took them of my husband and I), and were incredibly knowledgeable. Our guide was descended from one of the Bishops who brought over the beautiful French stained glass. While Cardinal Wolsey never really came there, it was cool to see his name on the wall and his portrait in the palace. The grounds and gardens are so beautiful. There is a nice store and cute coffee truck that offered a wonderful hot chocolate with whipped cream and what is called "chocolate flake" on top that was super tasty. The swans were very pretty, but if you came to see them ring the bell for food around one in the afternoon, good luck. So many people feed them now, they don't bother with the bell! Lol. And beware the pigeons. They aren't shy!

Bit of a faff with the tickets- they send you a ticket with a bar code, but the gate staff can't actually scan them, so everyone had to go to the ticket office- imagine the queue size of all the people turning up for an event! And only 2 people in the ticket office, and the printed tickets wouldn't scan so most of them were having to be found manually- what a waste of time! Not much point in buying them in advance really. Once in, there was plenty of space to sit and watch. The falconers mic wasn't particularly loud, and with the kids running round, screaming and crying because there was an expectation for them to sit down, we couldn't really hear much of what was said. Being a warm day, the birds weren't particularly hungry or motivated enough to fly to command, so in the end only 1 bird flew. Beautiful surroundings, lovely sunny day, just a few irks along the way. Shame.

An interesting collection of items and information about Wells and its Bishop. There are displays detailing 800 years of history. The Palace has gardens to enjoy. We went on a rainy October day and couldn't see a lot from the ramparts due to the mist. However, we would like to return on a clearer day to see if we can spot Glassonbury Tor in the distance. An adult ticket for the Palace and Gardens is £17.50 but this can give you entry for a year. There are some concessions and family tickets available, and there is a joint ticket that also gives access to the cathedral. That's worth getting if you intend to visit both sites (they're next to each other). Accessibility is good. The inside of the building is mostly level, and there is a platform lift. There is a clear even path around the gardens. The ramparts are only accessed via stone steps.

This is a paid-entry attraction adjacent to the magnificent Wells Cathedral. The purchase of the entry ticket does, however, provide you with future access to the Palace and Gardens for a year. The actual Bishop's Palace was a little underwhelming and somewhat disappointing, especially having just visited the truly awe-inspiring 13th century Wells Cathedral in all its Gothic splendour. The Bishop's Palace Gardens, on the other hand were beautiful to explore and provided numerous opportunities to take some stunning photographs. There were lots of different areas to discover and a fair amount of public art on display to add further interest. So in summary, I felt the Gardens are well worth a visit.... the Bishop's Palace less so as there weren't many rooms open to the public and the visit seemed to be over in no time.
