Great I'm sure, if you are buying, NOT selling. I'm sure they are ideal for some things (they seem to specialize in old coins and art - although I had signed/numbered litho & beautifully custom framed pieces sell for next to nothing) but I wouldn't use them for selling antique/vintage furniture of any type. They won't accept a reserve on anything, and they tell you how "soft" the antique market is (so you're not 'surprised' when they get nothing for it) there are places that still value antiques and their true worth... take the time to find them.
The two men picking up my furniture didn't take great care in protecting or wrapping pieces. They were loading up an antique desk and dumped the drawers out, chipping one of them. Even movers know to remove drawers and at least wrap valuable pieces. But beware... their contract clearly states they are NOT responsible for damages to your pieces - EVER. I had a bad feeling the moment they walked in the door. They are about moving VOLUME, not helping you value/sell your pieces. You are solely at the mercy of their marketing (or lack thereof) to get quality buyers to come to their auctions.... and they are not held accountable to the seller for anything. They get the deal hunters not true investors. But They won't hold your items for a later auction with a different clientele or even MARKET your items for more than a few days at best - and as I mentioned they are NOT RESPONSIBLE for any damage THEY cause to your items between your home and the auction. You can't get much more UNaccountable than that. Are you a BUYER? You can get some great deals I'm sure. Are you a SELLER??? Be very careful - they make a good deal of money off moving volumes of things at NO starting bid or reserve (plus they charge the buyers a fee that you'll never see) Remember that first and foremost. It should be a last resort. You might be better off taking the tax write-off as a donation.
RESPONSE: Jason, I totally understand your need for rebuttal and justification, but I still stand by the gist of my review which is I do NOT think you all are on the side of the owners/consignors - otherwise you'd be open to a reserve or a buy-back agreement, AND you'd take responsibility for any damages caused by your transporting and storage. You are correct, I am most upset by the King Ranch chairs selling at a ridiculous price. But soiled? Those chairs sat in an Executive Conference Room unused for years. If they were "well soiled and nicked" (your words) YOUR OWN PHOTOS sure don't indicate that (attached), so why are you suddenly degrading them? To account for a ridiculous low selling price. Anyone that has given TGA a bad review has had their items dissed in rebuttal. I'd have more respect for you all if you'd admit even once in awhile that "it was a slow auction night" or "the crowd just wasn't spending a lot"... even if you couldn't justify the low sales prices.
The tables you speak of were still aesthetically beautiful and functional; their leaves could be easily reinforced and stabilized. They are ANTIQUES after all, and honestly after witnessing the loading of all my pieces who knows how they arrived at your facility.
As I said, I'm sure buyers love you guys. THAT'S your business. I don't begrudge you that. I DO think you should provide consignors with that contract to read EARLY in the process -- that might help avoid misunderstandings. I find it interesting that it doesn't say anywhere what you will do in the interest of the consignor (the client signing) such as marketing and thoroughly researching value. Just an...
Read moreTGA offers a service, a very nice service for the area. This applies to buying & selling. (5 STAR)
Unfortunately, they have become A LOT more limiting to work with. (I do think a part is to allow them to handle so many items.) I do & have highly recommended them to others, BUT I HAVE to also give a strong warning. YOU MUST FIT THEIR (1-Day) NARROW PICKUP SCHEDULE, OR you should NOT bid on their site. (-1 Star)
Again, TGA does offer a great service that is hard to find. I think they offer a broader chance for items to sell. On the other side, & unfortunately, they don't always take enough pictures to give you a complete feel for the condition of the items. When there aren't enough pictures to give you a full & complete snapshot of the item & its quality, you might end up with the perfect item... OR it might really be a disappointment. They do not often give a description of the item beyond the title. NO ADDED STATEMENT OF ITEM CONDITION, NO PICTURE OF FLAWS. (including damage to the item). (-1 Star) That could be ESPECIALLY critical when it applies to ONLINE ONLY - ESTATE SALES, w/ no hands on preview available.. (-.5 Star)
Granted, TGA's JOB is to sell the items, but then again you don't want to pay for something that isn't in an acceptable condition.
A minor but current example of not enough detailed pictures: magnalite pot w/ lid pictured from directly above showing the top of the lid, and the bottom surface of the pot to show the maker info... But no actual view of the physical stewpot exterior, interior, or profile. You could determine the pot diameter (imprinted on the btm), but not the capacity, depth of the pot or its surface condition. Not major issue, but a big unknown.
On a more personal note the staff personally can be really nice, but then they are VERY unforgiving. The bulk of my positive interactions are actually from a couple years ago. Unfortunately my recent problem actually stemmed from their not liking a previous review (that I had no knowledge of) that was made by my mother-in-law. So current... my winning bid to help my son get a replacement dorm fridge, was revoked. I hadn't known about the review. I didn't know they had decided to ban me. I gave my full name, when I registered for this auction. I wasn't trying to hide or get away with anything.
I HAD stopped buying from their site 2 years ago because I had personally objected to a couple of their policy changes, and no longer wanted to work within that limitation. (Especially their change of pickup policy to: p/u on time, or we get to resell the item & get to keep your money too rule.)
It is their choice as to who they are willing to work with & who they are willing sell to.
It was also unnecessary to ban relatives, because they didn't like a review.
Everyone has their own limits, and as long as you are aware of & willing to work within their policy rigidity, then you know where you stand.
As you can see above, I didn't mark the stars based upon my current interaction. I marked the stars based upon the current limitations of the site & their policies. I did enjoy working with them for almost 2 years, so I truly hope they can improve so that more people can happily benefit. They do have a nice extended family that we had truly enjoyed meeting, and...
Read moreLet me start with with some key information related to my background and demographics in order to provide credibility of this review. I am a woman in my early 50âs who decided to take a break from practicing law in order to focus on spending more time with her family. As I have gotten older, I became less concerned with my role and responsibilities as partner of my firm and more concerned with being able to have meaningful relationships with my loved ones. I had no regrets on my decision on retiring from my career at law, but after my interaction with this auction house I do have one regret. I regret that I am not still an active practicing attorney in order to rectify the long laundry list of injustices conducted at this auction house. Trust me, if I still was an attorney, the doors of this place would be closed by the end of next week permanently. If I could give this business a -100 star rating I would. I have dealt with over hundreds of auction houses in the last decade and I overall have had relatively little issues. The practices at this auction house make my stomach churn. My initial concerns stemmed from the lack of communication from this auction house on simple yet essential details such as an appropriate payment method for a ticket with a 5 figure dollar amount. Even something as simple as the correct location to collect these items was unclear because the auction house has 2 completely different addresses listed on current and past email signatures, invoices, and online sources. However, those things were not nearly as alarming as the other ethically concerning things I had experienced and/or observed. This place is completely reliant on the hard work of two underaged Hispanic children who are constantly asked to physically pull lot items from the back and then are asked to run out to customers cars to deliver said items while checking that all the items are present. Oh, and those poor kids do not even have a moving cart to help, or even a box to hold the items in. They are carrying these items out by hand one-by-one without even another second check from an adult on whether the correct items were pulled. The only other employees that worked at this auction house were 2 adult Hispanic women who sat down in the AC behind a desk to collect funds. And the only other thing I even saw the adult employees do besides essentially scamming customers with item misrepresentation, false advertising, and quite possibly tax evasion was verbally abuse the only 2 hardworking employees there who were probably a quarter of their own age. The adult employees refused to take any accountability for any wrongdoings and completely deferred the blame onto the helpless children who were asked to perform well beyond their capabilities. This business lacks organization, customer service, basic moral conduct, and professionalism. I will end my review with this concluding statement: avoid this auction house for the entirety of your existence because the individuals who are reaping all the benefits are members of the lowest tier of society who have no moral conscience or responsibility to their customers, employees, or...
