Four Winds Cellars — Attraction in Angels Camp

When posting a review of a winery, I think it important to explain what one likes or does not like about the experience. Merely saying the wine is good or swill demonstrates either the lack of a discerning palette or limited vocabulary or both. We stopped by Four Winds to pick up our shipment (we're wine club members) and taste some new releases. The 2017 Viognier is pretty tasty having a good deal of fruit flavor without excessive sweetness. This vintage is not as pleasing to my taste as last year's but is still good enough to have a few bottles around for the summer. It will do well with light appetizers (melon and prosciutto, mild cheese) or a mild seafood. My wife liked the 2014 Syrah a lot, so we got a bottle. I was concerned that it was too big to find a good pairing. She was right as we had it with ribs and the result was very tasty, bordering on excellent. I picked the 2015 Cabernet Franc. It's pretty light, more of a taste I associate with Pinot. We'll probably try it with a good filet mignon next week. David was tending the bar alone as was as pleasant and knowledgeable as ever. He's a good host who tries to figure out what you've liked so far in order to recommend other wines to taste. The store front is a bit narrow making it intimate with the right number of people but crowded on busier weekends. My general experience is that Four Winds Wines are among the best in Murphys.
