As a non practicing Catholic, when my mom came from Peru to visit me in ATL I knew I had to work fast on finding her a Catholic Church for mass. Her first Sunday I had an appt so I had dropped her off at a Catholic Church in Decatur while I went to my appointment. When I picked her up I met her with great sadness only to learn she had been badly discriminated against due to her thick Peruvian accent and limited English. This hurt me to my core so I went searching for another church and found Our Lady of Lourdes. This time I called and explained what had happened and they assured us their church was all inclusive. Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church did not disappoint. In fact it exceeded all expectations. My mom was so happy and felt so appreciative and grateful. While I’m not really religious myself, Catholicism is still intrinsically embedded in my Peruvian culture — I’ve never ever been to a mass where it didn’t feel like a somber funeral like experience. Quite frankly I’ve never enjoyed a mass until I experienced Our Lady of Lourdes in Atlanta. It felt alive. It felt joyous. It felt rational (encouraging people to vote and get vaccinated as well as promoting to accept people of all beliefs and walks of life). I am so grateful for the amazing community of Our Lady of Lourdes for welcoming us and having such a beautiful service. Last but not least , to make the whole experience even more meaningful — the presence of San Martin de Porres, one of the most beloved Peruvian saints— stood largely displayed. Talk about coming...
Read moreI come from a prominently white community in Michigan. I am a devout Roman Catholic. I had the privilege of a Catholic education from grades 1-12. I was taught that all races and all people are created equal. It was easy to practice these values among others just like me. When I got into the "real world" it was challenging to practice those values I had been taught and I agreed with. Through tough lessons, the Holy Spirit has guided me to embrace and practice those values of equality and love for my neighbor. I truly am my brother's keeper regardless if you are my friend or enemy. Jesus embraced the outcast and despised of society.
This is a fantastic Catholic Church! I attended it as a visitor to Atlanta, GA recently. I read on the church's website that this was the 1st predominantly black Roman Catholic Church established in Atlanta with a long, proud history. I have attended Catholic Mass all over the USA. This is the same Roman Catholic Mass that everyone knows except so joyful and full of singing and praising God! White people are fervrent in their religious beliefs, but they don't express it openly as much as they should.
I was one of 30 white Catholics in a packed, black Catholic Mass. I never felt so welcomed and full of joy! Thank you for sharing your Love and Faith with me!...
Read moreAt a Saturday 5pm Mass, for the Feast of Christ the King, we were treated to a liberal stump speech talking about how people who are fleeing terrorism, violence and etc, need to be allowed to enter the USA illegally because we should be grateful for what we have and share it.... 🤨 He made some good points that could have actually helped me prepare myself for receiving the holy Sacrament, if he didn't distract me with MSNBC talking points.
This liturgy also featured an out of order and hand holding OUR FATHER, no kneeling after the ANGUS DEI (perhaps a diocesan thing), no BOWING at Christ's incarnation during the Creed.
Father was available for confession before Mass. Like all the other reviews, the music was inspiring and they offered news visitors bread.
I don't recommend parish for anyone who prefers orthodoxy. If you need a good guide for the orthodoxy, read 'The Divine Symphony: An Exordium to the Theology of the...
