The John F. Kennedy Memorial, located on Ocean Street in Hyannis, Massachusetts, offers a peaceful and reflective experience overlooking the serene waters of Lewis Bay. This bay was a favorite sailing spot for President Kennedy during his time at the Kennedy Compound in Hyannis Port, adding a deeply personal touch to the location.
The memorial itself is elegantly simple yet powerful. It features a large stone wall with a bronze medallion on each side. Facing the bay is a bronze relief of President Kennedy’s left-profile bust, beautifully crafted and dignified. On the reverse side, visible from Ocean Street, is the Great Seal of the United States, symbolizing Kennedy’s role as a national leader.
The surrounding landscape enhances the sense of tranquility. Lush greenery, a neatly maintained lawn, and a spacious concrete terrace create an inviting atmosphere. Several bluestone benches are thoughtfully placed for visitors to sit, reflect, and enjoy the views. At the center of the memorial is a reflecting pool with an illuminated fountain, inspired by the Eternal Flame at Kennedy’s gravesite in Arlington National Cemetery.
Encircling the pool is a bluestone ring engraved with one of Kennedy’s inspiring quotes: "I believe it is important that this country sail and not lie still in the harbor." This message, combined with the peaceful setting, makes visiting the memorial a moving experience and a fitting tribute to the enduring legacy of President...
Read moreI don’t like giving this four stars, as I was very moved when I got there/walked around. The only reason I am is because there’s just really nothing to do. There’s a cute lil’ old man selling hats 🧢 for $20 bucks inside a tiny booth; but other than that and the scenic water view, there just isn’t much. I’d say 20 minutes here would be stretching it before you get the itch to go on and leave. It’s so sad, because I know Dallas has some amazing places to honor JFK. I was hoping Hyannis would compare. Oh well— as you can see, we had one of the most beautiful days EVER to go, and the skies were like something out of a painting. The picture I took of those homes are right on Ocean St. pulling out of the memorial— I thought they were pretty picturesque!! Just give it a stop, selfie, and go if you get...
Read moreBe careful going here. The town has a little scam going on where they will ticket you $50+ at 31 minutes of parking. The closest side of the parking lot has a 30 minute parking sign (bear in mind, this memorial also has a beach), while the far side of the parking lot has no clear signage. I'm sure the town makes a lot of money off this tactic, because we weren't the only ones who received tickets that day. It is a weird tactic to harass the people bringing money into your town. I would not...
