Hyannis, I can tell you from personal experience, is at the other end of a 90-minute bus ride from Boston's South Station, and the food at the Black Cat Tavern is worth every second of that bus ride. We stopped by on a Friday around 1pm, a bit before the regular tourist season, and we got a seat outside in the sun without a wait. Food: There's a sign out front bragging about the clam chowder, and they're not joking - they're serving some of the best clam chowder I've ever had. It's very rich, thick, hearty, and really an exemplar of what a chowder should be. For entrees I got the fish & chips, which featured a light and crispy batter, crunchy and wholesome shoestring fries, and perfectly cooked whitefish. My partner had a green salad with crab cake. The crab cake was excellent and very flavorful - there were some unusual ingredients like bell pepper. The salad itself was no slouch either, with a really varied mix of veggies in very generous amounts and a solid dressing. Location: Right by the Hyannis waterfront, probably ten minutes from the transit center and two minutes from the docks. There's not all that much of a view but it's a nice enough spot, especially if you're sitting outside. Service: Polite and efficient but impersonal. Food came out quickly and we didn't have any difficulties. If you're in Hyannis, or even just somewhere nearby, you should absolutely stop by for a meal! It's worth a trip to eat here.

Started with the fish tower which includes lobster tail four jumbo shrimp, blackened tuna, little necks and local oysters. Everything was fresh and hit the spot with the warm bread and butter. The clam chowder was thick and tasty but I couldn't find a clam in the cup. The fried fish platter was enormous and most made its way to a doggy bag. Perfectly fried clams, scallops, haddock and shrimp accompanied by string potato fries and fried onion rings. While I enjoyed the swordfish, one of the group was put off by the spices. It was a good sized piece of fish and there was nothing left. The fried oyster sub was suburb, oilless and very tasty. The surprise was the Ceasar salad with a side of lobster.. There had to be a half pound of steamed lobster with melted butter and perfect. For desert we shared the New York cheesecake and the ultimate chocolate cake, both of which were excellent. Service was excellent and could not be improved.

I used to come to this restaurant once a year when I would come visit my grandmother on the cape. Needless to say with black cats being my favorite of all the cats- this was my favorite from the name alone being as young as I was. Now that I am older I can appreciate this restaurant in a completely different way. The drinks were incredible. The food- to die for. I was so glad we decided to make another trip here, although Glen is no longer with us the spirit of The Black Cat remains. I must say the highlight of my trip this time around was absolutely Scott. He was so nice and helpful to my grandmother and I. I told him I HAD to leave there with a hoodie in remembrance. Being who I am I wanted black, of course, but they were out of stock and he was able to find me the next best color (grey). Thank you Scott for making my trip here so memorable after all these years. I can't wait to go back again.

The place is broken up into two. On the right is the more casual place with paper plates and a slightly limited menu. On the left is the regular restaurant. I ate on the casual side. The lobster roll was excellent, being served with six ounces of lobster. However the Caesar salad was mediocre (and small). I ordered it with chicken and i am not sure what kind of chicken they added. It certainly wasn’t fresh chicken breast. I’m guessing it was reheated sliced lunch meat chicken. Not sure what the restaurant was trying to achieve with that. Also had the baked cod. It was ok. Served plain in an aluminum tray with a baked potato. Oh and don’t expect to be served anything that resembles vegetables. They had live music while I was there. And being across the street from the water made it a nice place to hang out if the food quality is not your primary concern.
