This park is conveniently located and full of beautiful, easy trails along the river. I’ve walked my dog here multiple times a day while staying in Bend for a couple months as our rental is just a block away. It would be infinitely more enjoyable if it weren’t for the excessive number of inconsiderate and irresponsible dog owners with their dogs off-leash. My pup is sometimes dog-reactive, so I keep her muzzled and on-leash in consideration of other people’s dogs. Even if a dog is well-trained, I don’t know that, so seeing a dog off-leash causes me anxiety because, as my dog is muzzled, she now can’t protect herself if she reacts to a dog and the dog reacts back. We have had off-leash dogs run up to us numerous times here. In fact, the number of dogs off-leash on virtually all of the trails in the broader Bend area has prevented me from taking my dog hiking while here, which is a shame, because it really is something we both love. Sawyer Park sits right off of O.B. Riley Road. And once you enter the park you certainly feel like you’ve just stepped away from all of the hustle bustle and busyness of life.
There is ample parking, plenty of picnic tables, chances to see deer and bird watch, and to hear the sound of the calming Deschutes River as it rushes by.
