My husband, father-in-law, his girl friend, and I rode the GSMR, on Wednesday, October 23, the 1PM, Nantahala Gorge Excursion. All four of us thoroughly enjoyed the ride. We got there earlier than expected because someone (ME!), misread the length of time for our drive up, but no biggie. Several shops and restaurants were open for exploring. From the moment we arrived, the staff provided us with answers and information as our questions arose. Everyone we spoke with was professional, and friendly, going out of their way to make sure we were being taken care of. My FIL has a hard time getting around, so staff members (THANK YOU, RICK!!!) offered rides on the golf carts to get him (us) to our loading zone. ANYONE with handicaps, or mobility issues, they DO have a lift to assist people who can't climb steps, or are in a wheelchair, so if that's keeping you from going, I'm here to tell you - they have it covered! It's a manual crank lift, but it got the four of us up, and safely onto the train. Steven was our host on the MacNeill car. He was a hoot, very entertaining, and kept us listening with the stories - and jokes - about the history of the area. The MacNeill was clean, inviting, and comfortable. Windows were a bit dusty, but hey, the train moves up and down the tracks, and dust happens. It didn't keep us from seeing an American Bald Eagle 🦅, as we were riding past a section of Fontana Lake. It was AWESOME! Yes, it's a bit pricey, but it costs a lot to keep the train running. Our meals were quite tasty, but my recommendation is make sure you eat breakfast, or get a snack to eat before the ride, because we were three hours +/- into the ride before lunch was served. The 1st class cars were served lunch. The other cars offer a boxed lunch that you pick up before getting on the train. Yes, we splurged at my father-in-law's request. We went 1st class. My husband and I had the roast beef, with mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans (NOT CANNED), and a dinner roll. The other two had the grilled chicken salad - and to clarify - it is strips of grilled chicken, on top of a salad mix along with sliced, boiled eggs, crackers, and they each had a dinner roll with butter. The meals were delicious and filling. *And included in the 1st class ticket price. Our complementary insulated drink glasses remained filled with water, tea, coffee, or sodas. You can order alcoholic beverages from their list of options, but that's extra, although you can get a souvenir glass with those beverages. (We're not drinkers, but I paid attention to those around us who chose to imbibe). Dessert was good to me, but my husband is picky, and opted not to eat his after taking a taste - pumpkin swirl cheesecake. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the crust was a ginger cookie of some sort, or graham crackers with a ginger seasoning in it. It was definitely a seasonal type of dessert. He doesn't care for ginger spice. CHRIS came out with his guitar, towards the end of our trip, and sang a couple of requested tunes. Nice touch to round out our day. You CAN sing along ... "Country roads, take me home ..." One more thing then I'm done, the STEAM engine pulls you up to the NOC, then they **switch around power sources, and the diesel engine pulls the train back to the depot. It helps keep both engines running smoothly and efficiently. **This is done during the layover. Guests can get off the train to walk around and explore, or do a little bit of shopping. If you're on the fence about going on the train ride? I say DO IT!

What a wonderful excursion. Our family had talked about taking this train ride for years. We finally decided to quit talking about it and make it happen. We drove out from Charlotte, which makes it about a 3-hour drive each way. Do not let that deture you. It was a pleasant ride with not as many twists and turns you would expect driving up into the mountains. We arrived in good time to gather our boxed lunches and head to our section of the train for boarding. Heads up, after you pass through the ticketing window, walk down the hallway, exit the ticketing section, and make an immediate right to the window to gather your lunch orders. Give them your name, and they will politely bag all of your lunches. Very polite staff at the window. Thank you for all of your hard work. After stepping on the train and heading to your assigned seats, it will best serve you to look just to the left and right of the top of the windows. This will show you the seat numbers and letters. We traveled in the Coach Cars, and the seats were quite comfortable. Please be mindful that when they say the Train leaves on time.... it leaves on time! I must acknowledge the young lady who attended our train car. Katelyn was exceptional. Her service was given with a wonderful smile and a joy for what she does. For our ride, she served the Southland car. It is my understanding that she moves around into different roles. Should you be fortunate enough to have her be of service in any capacity, you will see first hand why I give her so much credit. She will be departing her service with GSMR soon, so I hope you have the opportunity to have the pleasure of her service. Good luck and best wishes on your endeavors, Katelyn. Moving on, the ride was great. It really puts you in a position that allows you to stop and slow down. To take in the ride and its sites. To hit the pause button. I would advise you to have your camera ready to capture some scenery that you may not see in your everyday life. The stop and layover in Dillsboro was very nice. There are plenty of unique shops to pick up some nice items and places to take some nice pictures. Once again, when they say the Train will depart on time, be on that Train🙂. The return ride was just as enjoyable. MAKE an effort to switch seats to allow those that are traveling with you the opportunity to have the same view you did. Upon our return to Bryson City, we walked through the different shops to see what they had to offer. I made it a point to walk through the train museum that offered up working scale model train systems. I hope this review is helpful in planning or considering your next adventure

After living in the Great Smoky Mountains for several years on the Tennessee side, my wife and I finally took time to make reservations on line for The Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. We had a great welcome to the RR by the parking lot attendants and everyone we dealt with was very nice. HOWEVER, upon riding the train (we book two reserved seats in the Cherokee Car. Upon the train leaving the station and for the entire trip (seat numbers 57 & 58), we soon learned we were on the WRONG side of the train. I would venture to say 90% of the time we were looking at either a rock wall, woods or cutzoo. “Occasionally” we would have a few views of a lake or a stream. However most all the views were on the other side of train and made for a very boring trip. It felt awkward trying to look out the other side over or around people sitting there and people would look at you as if you were watching them. We felt the web site should have said the the views on this side of the Gorge excursion has limited and obstructive views. We would have booked the other side had we known. That, coupled with the fact that I am limited to what I can eat due to some health reasons, we chose the PB&J (which web site shows PB&J with grape jelly). We didn’t know after picking up or box lunches before leaving on the train and until later when we went to eat them, that they were actually strawberry PB&J which I can not have. So that was a waste of money. So, while we would not say we would not recommend going on this (as we do think it is a great experience) it should have told us something on line when we booked the tickets. We also booked the same time we booked this trip, we booked 4 seats on the Polar Express for Christmas when our kids are in town (which we booked for 8:30pm) and pray we got the right seats there as we chose the Silver Meteor Car section H 29,30,31&32 and praying it is a much better experience then this one was. Again, we are not saying to not ride this, but simply they should have told us the view was limited and we should have had the choice of grape or strawberry PB&J on the box lunches.

I will start this review by stating from the get go, it had “Carnival Cruise” vibes to it, meaning there was a ton of people like cattle herding. We boarded and took our seats and happy our seats in the open air gondola were comfortable. They offered us a soft drink and a complimentary mimosa. We were located on a train car that was located right behind the steam engine. Boy, we could hear the whistle at every crossing and there were many. It was a painfully piercing sound! The first half of the ride we saw nothing more than kudzu, rocks, and branches. We were hugging the mountain and there was not much scenery to see. Halfway thru the ride, we switched seats to the other side and the scenery was much better. We were able to see streams, mountains, and better view of bodies of water, although the lake was very low and wasn’t as pretty as usual. We stopped for an hour midway thru the ride at an outdoor center. The only benefit to that was going to the bathroom. The few stores they had were nothing special and overpriced. You can watch kayakers navigating the river. I personally would not recommend this trip. We were fortunate to be on this trip when it was a nice day and not rainy. I don’t know how it works when it is raining in the open air gondola. Most of the train cars are closed in. Be aware that in order for you to get on the train, you need to walk on gravel. People with mobility issues need to be mindful of this. I crossed this train ride off my bucket list and glad I did, but won’t do it again. In closing, the woman who narrated was the highlight of the trip. She told us about the town of Judson that is now under Fontana Lake and the government flooded the town in 1944. If you had quality expectations for this trip, good luck. I would rather have my teeth cleaned. The ride to Bryson City via car had prettier views than we did on the train.

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad was an excellent family outing. We learned a good bit of history, and the ride was comfortable and fun. The views are outstanding, and for train obsessed kids, this is an incredibly affordable way to let them enjoy their obsession. The majority of the trip met my expectations, but there were a few negatives, which left a damper on the experience. The tickets say you will switch sides after the layover, but then our attendant said "only if you want to". Well, of course the folks across from us didn't want to. Either enforce the policy or don't have it, it's not fair to make the riders sort that out. The attendant also said, no less than 4 times, that the railroad was lacking employees, because "no one wants to work". Sir, you are telling on yourself, just how little money you're willing to work for. I went to the railroads website and that job pays $12-13 hourly. Stop ranting at the paying customers who are supporting the business, about how poorly the business pays workers, because the truth is no one wants to work for too little to support themselves or their family. Lastly, when buying the tickets we got boxed lunches. The website said to let them know if we had any dietary restrictions, so I requested a vegan adult meal in that form. They called me to let me know they couldn't provide that, but I could bring food, just not in a cooler or picnic basket. However, I paid for three meals and then was only given two, and we had to go back and get the third - which was PB&J and chips. The only part that wasn't vegan was the cookies. If they change the cookies they could actually provide a fully vegan meal. Regardless, if I paid for a meal I should have gotten one.
