Burlington saw two ecstatic pitch invasions this weekend at the University of Vermont’s Virtue Field, after @Vermont Green FC won two hard-fought playoff games to take the club to its first national finals in the United Soccer League’s second tier. On Sunday night, the league announced the Vermont side would retain its home advantage again in the final against Seattle-based Ballard FC on Saturday. “We’re incredibly excited to be hosting a final,” club co-founder Patrick Infurna said. “Our soccer community in general has earned it.” Read more at VTDigger.org. So Virtue Field is okay. It's bleacher seating that offers a decent bit of leg room, unless you sit in the chair section, then it's sardine city. The lack of bathrooms is a drag, so for games it Port-a-Potties and that's always disgusting. The score board is ancient tech, and badly needs an update showing live camera shots and replays. A shared sport field means there's a dizzying amount of lines on the pitch, less than ideal if you desire a pure pitch experience. Honestly I've seen players blow chances cause the only explanation is they mistook a yellow Lacrosse line as the soccer touchline. There are no concessions, unless you are there for say an VT Green's game, and they roll in some food trucks (So you get Food Truck + Stadium pricing! Get ready for $20 burgers and $12 cans of beer) Finally I'd love to speak to the design architect that decided or was somehow required to put the stands facing due west into the setting sun. How many games are played there in the morning, when the sun is in the east, maybe 5%? The other 95% have fans baking and staring into a scorching ball of plasma for hours on end. Not to mention if you faced them East you'd have a lovely view of the Green Mountains instead of the dorms over...
