05/18/2019 As others have stated, the office staff (lady at the sales window and her owner? boss) were as helpful and friendly as any buying consumer could possibly hope for. Great local people that bend over backwards to help with their knowledge of crabs and other seafood. Keep in mind that prices will constantly change with the ever-fluctuating seafood market, production costs and public demand, so that should be expected. All of their crabmeat is prime/excellent. Presently there are 3 different grades of lump #1. Top grade/today fresh, perfect and pleasing to a crab lovers' eye. #2. Same lump with mixed in backfin. #3. Now called lump but we know it as all backfin. Yesterdays (05/17/2019) per pound prices - $30, $25 and $18 - All extremely fair value. There's a video on their website where picked crab shells and other discarded crab meat/residue are fed into an extruder to produce a product which is sold in 5 lb. blocks of refined paste (called "Badder" $7.50 for 5 lbs.) Apparently restaurants use this crab tasting product to stretch the volume of crabcakes they make and possibly? help bind/hold the crabcake together? (I've tried it twice - not to my taste) In ending, for the best and the freshest eastern shore crabmeat plus dealing with decent human beings selling a reasonably priced crabmeat, J.M. Clayton Co. is the place. I'm pretty sure hey ship? Call them.
09/04/2021/Labor Day Weekend Again, I went to J.M. Clayton's. This time I bought two #3's and a claw 1 lb. container of crab meat, all for under $85. In comparison one container of #1 at Hockers being $80 and at a Ray's Shanty Restaurante down in Chincoteague, VA. just under $50. J.M. Clayton has the freshest crabmeat by far, also the best tasting and considerably cheaper. The people who run the J.M. Clayton are the kind of people you would want to be your neighbors., decent, truthful and real eastern shore. All positives in my book. Taked note: Crabs everywhere here on the eastern shore this summer were really scarce and definitely expensive at $200 a bushel (uncooked) and up. Buying by the pound cooked and picked for the best crabcakes money can buy is smart spending for consumers, that's why I buy from...
Read moreLook no further if youâre looking to have crabs shipped to you. Just had an order shipped to Longmont Colorado and the crabs came in impeccable condition. Only a very small handful of cracked shells from an entire bushel. Price was great, shipping was shipping but again I was having them send crabs halfway across the country so I shouldnât expect anything less. Chop tank crabs were BIG AND HEAVY! 10 of us sat down on a Sunday afternoon and picked the entire bushel saving the claws obviously for cream of crab soup. Living on the other side of the country makes it difficult but the world has shrunk and JM Clayton is doing it right. Amazing amazing people to work with, hats off to Debbie and her sister(forget her name) for amazing customer service. Note that Debbie and her sister sound almost identical so donât make the mistake I did by assuming Debbie is answering the phone every single time. Canât wait for our next order and will definitely be shopping with...
Read moreWonât go anywhere else to buy crabmeat and drive from PA just to get it. Excellent!! 2025 UPDATE: What the heck has changed in 1year?? Iâve been driving a long way for years and enjoyed the crabs. I bought 1/2 bushel of Wye River premium crabs and 1/2 bushel Choptanks. Both were light, paper thin and not worth picking. The seasoning seems different - not JO nor Old Bay and so salty ruined the taste and burned in an open finger cut. And who is steaming the crabs? Mushy inside. Iâve definitely had better from Claytonâs and not coming back. Only good thing I can say is crabmeat might still be ok, but I didnât buy...
