Fish Room — Attraction in Cary

I've been coming here for 5+ years. They have a selection that is far greater than your local chain pet store. I recently went back in June of 2023 and it was great. Prices were affordable for the variety of fish offered. I keep freshwater and saltwater fish in several tanks and can tell you that 95% of the people looking to stock a tank from beginner to advanced will find the fish offered here at some point. I purchased a dozen fish and all are happy and thriving two weeks later.

(6/23/23 edit: Spoke too soon. Ich in my tank. I only deal with individuals and haven't had an ich problem in years. The only introduction could have been from the fish room purchase. Fool me for at least the 5th time in a row. Edited a 4 star review down to 2.)

That being said, I stopped going here for a few years because it was always sick fish, dead fish in tanks, or ich on the fish in the store (the tanks are plumbed together so it can spread throughout the system easier). I was burned a few times in a row and just stayed away and found other people/places to get fish. The older reviews were justified, but I think something has changed.

I noticed there weren't any live plants in any of the fish tanks, so the store might be treating all the water to prevent disease. The shop is on the smaller side and I doubt they have the space to quarantine fish from the wholesaler. If you can't quarantine, it's a good plan to prophylactically treat your system to stop disease from taking hold (edit: In my case a bottle of api super ich cure $17 was about 1/2 the price I paid for the fish. Again, consider this treatment cost when buying fish here)

I read the reviews with complaints about customer service. I personally like being left alone to observe the fish and you should spend some time doing this. Mike approached me after 15 minutes in the store asking if I had any questions and I told him which fish I wanted. He didn't pressure me or hover, which I appreciate. During this time of COVID Quarentine, our daughter had expressed serious interest in getting a fish. Having never had an aquarium before, I did some research and then went to a big box stores andsand searched on Amazon to price supplies and tank selections. I am a big proponent of supporting small local business, so I loaded up my kiddo and headed to The Fish Room. Luckily, they had a similar setup to what I had eyed during my research. However, the gentleman could not have been more uninterested in our first time fish keeping. He never even came out from behind the counter, except when I requested he remove the until from a tall shelf. I had to ask numerous questions and wander all around the store to retrieve what I assumed were necessary starter supplies for a 2.6 gallon tank to house one beta fish. He provided next to no insights and we left with completely inappropriate decor and a tank without an adjustable current. Our new friend paid the price for the first few days. Little did he know, I would have been willing to spend more money in his store had he just show some interest in making the sale. This is for the Fish Room in Raleigh of capital blvd.I WISH I COULD ZERO STARS! This is RIDICULOUS!! LOOK AT ALL THE OTHER COMMENTS PLEASE BEFORE GOING. Prior to buying fish from this establishment I had a aquarium that was running beautifully and plentiful of fish. I went to this location to purchase a new addition to the Aqua fam. And by the morning of the following day. The fish was having severe issues. I did everything I could to save it but when I inspected it closer. I noticed that the common pleco. Whom is all black had white/ grey spots on it. According to the fish room it was my fault. They still replaced it. How is that when I had a perfectly good tank before that. So with that complaint made. I was given a gift piece of paper to basically force us continue to buying their products and sick marine life. They don’t have employees at least trained enough to be able to notice something is wrong. There is consistent water testing so your telling me you didn’t see ich on any of these fish. But when it was brought up you still sell these poor sick fish. DONT BUY FISH FROM HERE OR ANY PLANTS. Against their recommendation that plants don’t carry a disease but these plants are housed in the water these sick fish are in. Fish Room you not be receiving any of my money.
