The Greek Revival sanctuary building was originally home to St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church (now at 405 King Street). After St. Matthew’s moved to its present location opposite Marion Park, a small group of German Lutherans who wanted to return to their “home church” and worship in their native tongue acquired the building in 1878. St. Johannes purchased the 2½-story single house on Hasell Street next to the sanctuary for its parsonage in 1919. The church’s last pastor to reside here moved on in 2006 and the church faced a difficult decision: sell “as is” or take on an extensive – and expensive – restoration project. After years of dispute and debate, the small congregation took out a 25-year, $350,000 loan to reimagine the former parsonage as an event venue (primarily wedding) complete with English garden, reception hall, and, if desired, sanctuary. Check the church’s “Events” calendar for opportunities to visit.

A wedding photographer career dream came true for me at this venue!! I have wanted to photograph a wedding in Charleston for some time now and absolutely LOVED getting to visit this venue. It was the perfect location for an intimate Charleston wedding. It was a short drive to the Battery for the First Look & had GORGEOUS spots for photos throughout the whole wedding day! I hope to visit again soon :)

My daughter had her wedding in Charleston this past September in the little chapel. This place was perfect and she loved it! Amy was so great to work with! She was always great at getting back with me in an email or on the phone! The pastor was great. Everyone was just so nice and easy to work with! I highly recommend having your wedding here! If I could give it six stars, I would!

Stunning venue that incorporates the best Charleston has to offer! The Parsonage feels like you own a piece of the city for a weekend - from the lush private garden to the beautifully decorated interior residence. You can choose between a garden, small chapel, or large church for your ceremony. All of your wedding photos will be amazing because of the tall windows and natural light throughout! The bridal suite is the perfect place to get ready for the day with tons of veranda space. Barbara who runs the Parsonage could not be easier to work with. She is amazing and takes great care and pride in every event hosted here. Could not recommend the Parsonage more...

This is a really great downtown church with an informal, welcoming congregation. All are welcome and by that the pastor and the members do indeed mean "all". The sanctuary has the absolute best acoustics in town. When the German immigrant community built this church in the 1800's they didn't have sound engineers but the acoustics when the choir sings attest to the fact that they knew what they were doing. Whether you are just passing through as a tourist on a Sunday or are now a resident of this beautiful southern city called Charleston you should stop by and...
