My wife and I booked a walking tour through Trip Advisor. We have done walking tours throughout the world and this was the first terrible tour we have ever experienced. Our tour guide Evans, informed the group that his family has been in Charleston since 1735 and that he is NOT part of the establishment. He is very bitter about this and made that clear to all. He mentioned that cotillions are still done and debutantes are presented to society. He quoted Sheldon from the Big Bang theory and was very derisive towards this system. He again made it clear that he was NOT part of this society.

We then entered St. Michael’s Church and he informed us that The King of England heads the Church, but he does not like the current King but prefers the Late Princess Diana. There was a lovely couple from the Westminster section of London on our tour and this was insulting to them.

We than progressed to the Nathaniel Russell house and Evans erroneously informed us that Nathaniel was not a slave owner. I knew this to be incorrect and we left the tour.

Evans is bitter, angry, insulting and inaccurate. Guides should be friendly, excited about their native City and share the interesting history without editorial comments. He may or may not be indicative of the tour guides that Walks of Charleston employees, this was my first and last experience with them.

The good news is that Charleston is a beautiful town with great history and we had a great time touring the area. Don’t ever let a bad guide sour you on a...

Our family recently had the pleasure of experiencing a tour of Charleston with Evans Byrd whose expertise and enthusiasm truly transformed our day. From the outset, it was clear that Evans possessed a profound knowledge of Charleston’s rich history and stunning architecture. Every stop on the tour was meticulously curated to highlight not just the grand landmarks, but also the intricate details and lesser-known stories that bring the city’s past to life.

What set this tour apart was the Evans ability to tailor the experience to our interests, blending historical facts with architectural insights in a way that was both engaging and educational. His passion for Charleston was infectious, and his explanations were so thorough that it felt like uncovering secrets that could take years of research to discover on your own.

Evans’ deep understanding of the city’s evolution and the stories behind each building made the tour not just informative, but truly memorable. If you’re looking for a comprehensive and personalized exploration of Charleston, I can’t recommend Evan’s and Walks of Charleston highly enough. This tour is a must for anyone wanting to dive deep into the city’s remarkable history and architecture. Book on their site and you get free ticket to Powder Magazine Museum....

We had the pleasure of having Dennis show us around the historic area of Charleston. Dennis was energetic and was extremely knowledgeable about the city. Everywhere you walk, everywhere you turn, he can fill you in with history and stories. He was funny, and I was never bored (which could easily happen to me when it comes to history). There was never a boring moment during the two-hour tour. I asked him for suggestions for restaurants after the tour, and he pointed us to a few. I tried one on my last day in Charleston, and I was not disappointed. Next time I am in town with friends, I will join Dennis's tour again. Don't forget to tip - he deserves it and he works too hard for it. I saw a few folks in my group quietly sneaked away at the end of tour saving a few bucks. You don't leave a good restaurant without tipping. Why would you do that after a tour? Some people are...

Our tour guide was Amy (I believe her name was) and she was the most delightful individual to walk us around the city. Made jokes, made a diorama and diagrams and pictures and really really went above and beyond to give you the best experience possible while walking you around the city. She would show you all the good picture spots. Made a customized map of scenic routes, other historical site routes, and good restaurant routes. She was also extremely informative and was able to answer any and all questions we had. She also gave us tips on different historical sites in charleston to visit and museums we should NOT miss out on. Her charisma is palpable. You can tell she’s truly in love with the city and it made us fall in love with the city. Truly the best way to spend a beautiful Saturday morning.
