I went to a production of Forum the other night with my grandmother. Here is my review: Hysteriums acting choices made my blood boil. They were unfunny, noncommittal to the character and cheap. The actor behind the role has clearly never had a days acting experience in his life. His performance is the painful equivalent to nails scraping against a board. He continued to upstage the other performers and turned to address the audience directly for each line he gives. He is not reactive acting but rather simply parroting dialogue through an awful exaggerated flamboyance which doesn’t add anything to the performance. He practically screams each line and his comedic delivery is rotten. He’s the perfect example of overacting to the point where there is no variables in the performance to show up complexity or variety in the character. He is constantly on a 10 which does not show the subtler moments that are required by the material. Truly a one note performance. There is a mass of jokes lost in poor delivery all around from each cast member but none worse than by Mr. Zayas. If he has any sense about him he will realize this business is not for him and do an about face into another career. Hysterium found a match however in the portrayal of Domina who also attended the school of poor overacting. Besides that the choreography was incredibly clunky which left for awkward moments of confusion and hesitation. In contrast to hysterium whos energy exceeded what was necessary The overall energy of the cast was too low for a comedy. Notable exceptions to this deluge of amateurness were Psedolus, Hero, and The Captain who breathed a sense of decency and pride into a show pervaded...
Read moreWent to see a performance to forget about this crazy year for just one night. The performers acted their hearts out. Unfortunately the staff ruined the entire night. The county no longer enforces masks but we wore them anyway. As soon as we enter we were chased down to have our temperature taken. This is a vital sign that should not be taken in a public venue by a non medical person ( what if I had a high temperature from a non infectious underlying cause? Blatant HIPPA violation!). Yes, I should have refused but in the interest of having a good evening I allowed it (little did I know). Drinks and snacks were available so after we took our six foot distanced seats the show began and we lowered our masks to drink water. That’s when the mask gestapo came while the performance was going on and told us to put our masks back on embarrassing us in front of the entire theater. We reluctantly complied (another mistake on my part).During the intermission and after the show we were given angry and creepy looks by this “gentleman” as he smoked his cigarettes ( obviously very concerned about his respiratory Heath!). I wanted to ask what his problem was but again in the interest of “trying” to have a good evening we moved on. This just ruined the whole night. The performers giver their all on stage but unfortunately seem to have a very power hungry and creepy staff running the place. I think everyone should support community theater but please look to other theaters in the Bay Area that not only appreciate their audience but are happy to...
Read moreI was extremely disappointed with my experience at the Carrollwood Theater. The doorman’s behavior was rude and unprofessional from the start. His first words were not a greeting, but simply, “Do you have tickets?” He then demanded our last name without explanation, which felt unnecessary.
After checking, he told us we could not enter the show at all because it had already started, and we would have to wait nearly an hour for intermission. He suggested rescheduling for the next show, but we would be out of town and unable to do so. I politely asked if he could quietly let us in without disturbing the crowd, but he refused.
When I then asked if we could receive a refund, he became defensive and claimed he “felt attacked.” At no point were we rude or aggressive — we were simply seeking a reasonable solution. Instead, we were met with assumptions, dismissiveness, and a complete lack of assistance.
We ultimately could not see the show at all, which was incredibly disappointing. Theater patrons should be treated with respect and professionalism, and this experience fell far short. I hope management addresses this behavior so future guests are not treated in...
