I recently attended the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra's performance of "The Nightmare Before Christmas" with my 4 year old daughter. I was hoping it would be a good introduction to the orchestra and it was wonderful. We had box seats (Mezzanine, last box, house right, front row) so she could see and it was a great choice. She was already familiar with the movie so was very excited to see it "on the big screen." We also enjoyed discussing all the different instruments she could see on stage before the performance. The theater is beautiful and she enjoyed exploring it before the performance. The show was at 7 PM but the conductor didn't come on stage until about 7:13 PM. If I had known, I might have waited a little before making our way to our seats as she started to get antsy waiting for it to start. (We were in our seats at 6:45). I'm used to performances starting 5 mins late at The Kennedy Center in DC. We were also very lucky finding street parking. I look forward to...
Read moreBeen here twice. The first experience was to see the U.S. Marine Band which was awesome. So much much inspirational and great talented musicians. Our favorite two favorite musicians was listening to Master Gunnery Sgt. Elisabeth Plunk as the principle flute player and Staff Sgt. Rachel Perry master the saxophone . The second experience was to watch the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra performs the entire move of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix while the movie is playing. This concert was amazing and the RPO was impressive. It was even more special with the crowds cheering when Hagrid, played by Robbie Coltrane showed up on the screen. The night was extra special this was the same day Robbie past away and great way to pay tribute....

While the RPO and other national names can be too expensive for regular attendance, the Eastman theater and music school offer many low-price and free community music events that are worthwhile. The theater itself is stunning and the seats quite comfortable. Only drawback is very limited restrooms for performers with a larger ensemble...trying to use them during a short intermission is impossible. Plenty for patrons in the audience area though, and the woman's lounge on the balcony level is worth a visit during...
