I visited there this past weekend when I was in town for a concert. I live about 2 hours away so I figured I would check the place out. I am a collector (1100 games, around 60 systems) and this store REALLY appeals to folks like me they have a great selection and many of the prices were very reasonable.
In this day and age I don't HAVE to go into a game store to buy games. I love going for the experience and while this store DOES have a lot of cool stuff to look at I was still very disappointed with my time there. I probably spent around 15 minutes looking around and no one bothered to even acknowledge me. It wasn't busy there was one other customer having a conversation with a gentleman behind the counter and another worker came out a few moments later. Now I'm not an ego-maniac or anything i dont need everything to be about me but a simple greeting or maybe asking if i was finding everything ok would have been nice, and lets face it that's not really asking a lot. Its like retail 101. I ended up leaving without buying anything and was bitterly disappointed. Its a bit of a drive but had it gone differently i would have liked to take a trip there semi-frequently to add to my collection. I can't say i have any reason to make the trek back as I can get the same experience online and while some of the more local shops don't have that kind of selection, they at least will say SOMETHING when i walk into their store and i won't feel so uncomfortable.
My wife, who was sitting in the car said the workers made a remark as i left that i didn't shut the door. I honestly didn't notice that when i left their door didnt shut correctly. I didn't hear the comment personally as i was on the other side of my vehicle which was parked in front at the time. This wasn't the reason I disliked my time there but it certainly didn't surprise me. I'll be in Syracuse again in about a month but i won't be...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI'm nearly 30 and have been gaming and shopping at the local game stores since I was a kid. As I grew up, places like Microgame and Game Craze became my game stores of choice since my gaming interests extended beyond just the current games, but back into the retro games on older systems, which these stores had. I'm a collector, so shops like these are my favorite.
Much to my surprise as my wife and I were downtown last year, there was a new video game store. The sign and colors of the store popped out and the place looked clean. The place was Voltage Video games. Now, nearly a year later, this has become my game store of choice. They don't always have every game you are looking for in stock, but the nature of a mom and pop style game store is that you are at the mercy of what is brought in from local gamers, and Syracusans have definitely brought some hard to find classics through the doors of Voltage.
The best things about Voltage are the service and the prices. The service, which when compared to Game Craze is like staying at the Hilton compared to Super 8, and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable.
They are very competitively priced, for both purchases and trade ins, and they do their research in Syracuse to make sure you are getting the best prices around.
I highly recommend checking out Voltage and will continue to shop there for as long as the store graces my home city, which will hopefully be a...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThe first time I walked in it was dark and kind of funky, most people wouldn't care, but it really is a weird vibe and not a great first impression. They have an awesome selection of retro and current games, most are used and fairly priced.
I first purchased a n64 controller for my computer and I called them and they had a very friendly and informative response to questions about pricing and compatibility. It was priced much lower than something on amazon or Ebay, and I was surprised by the quality, sadly it was used and the joy stick can be very touchy and not work for some games but overall I was satisfied.
I then decided to just browse again with a friend and he went to the counter to ask for some quarters for the arcade machine and the employee had a very nasty response to my friend just asking for quarters. I'm not sure If he worked there or was just a friend of the other employees, he still acted very rude even though my friend was being polite and respectful, and he really did not make us want to come back after that interaction.
Overall it's the best video game store in Syracuse and I probably will...
