The Salt City Market will occupy all or part of the footprint of the Hotel Mowry, site of at least two historical fires.

Syracuse marches quickly onward to the 120th Anniversary of the first fire, which occurred March 1899.
On that day, Hamilton S. White left a concert, probably organized by his wife Adelaide, and met his assistant, who brought White's fire gear and outfit in a wagon kept ready for the purpose.
With the help of White, the ninety guests of the Hotel Mowry were saved.
White, unfortunately, did not seek adequate medical attention for his chest pains. His memory is honored by a sculpture in Fireman's Park near the Hamilton S. White house.
That makes an extraordinary story. However, the White family might be one of the sources of leadership in Syracuse Philanthropy, carried on by the Allyn Family Foundation.
A Wikipedia article probably tells only an inkling of their good works.
So many questions could be answered from our archives.
What was the concert program on the night Hamilton S. White answered the fire bells?
Did White REALLY invent the brass fire pole?
Where are the houses that White made available to families displaced by fires?
How should we honor this unique convergence of events, the fire's anniversary and the phoenix that arises from the ashes of that hotel?
Maybe this is a moment around which our...
Read moreSalt City Market is located in downtown Syracuse. We were there on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The market has a great vibe and hip background music. The market has a bar. The market is a mixed use facility. There are apartments for rent above it.
There are a variety of food stalls, ranging from middle eastern, to BBQ soul food, to Jamaican, to Vietnamese. There is a "bakery" specializing in delicious select slices of cake, and they have Baklava. We tried the Vietnamese food. It was fresh and delicious. From a guy's point of view, I was left a little hungry. My wife was satisfied. Get a hot or cold bubble tea from the cookie stall behind the cake stall. I also had a large oatmeal raisin cookie that was the best I ever had. It was filling. It was made without butter. Take another cookie for another day.
Prices are moderate. Some might feel they are a little high, but the quality of the food was worth it. Expect to pay $12-16 for an entree.
Read the wall near the bathrooms. It explains the origins of this great food market. It is likely busy during the week.
The market is located near Armory Square, a great place for window shopping, boutiques, and walking around. There are restaurants here too. You can get on the highway easily from here. Both places are near a somewhat deserted area, so keep your windows near closed until you get on the highway to go home.
Overall, it is a great and safe place to visit...
Read morethe Salt City Market (SCM) itself...... is a great addition to Syracuse, considering there is not A lot here. The food however, is hit or miss. To start, Ive been waiting to try Miss Prissy's. Everytime I come she is always closed, with some be back at a certain time sign, or on break, then no one ever comes back, at this point she should really just close up shop because this restaurant seems to only be a front. When literally EVER other place is open, this restaurant is constantly ALWAYS closed even on busy days. Soulutions, has been really great, food and service has been a great experience. The Cake Bar, is truly nothing special to be honest. An overpriced kiosk that sells desserts that you can truly either make yourself, or get anywhere else for 1/3 the price. Tried their Lotus cake, tasted like duncan hines boxed devils food chocolate cake base with a mock cookies and cream frosting and some bad overly sweet carmel frosting... Nothing impressive here or "complex". Cupcakes were the same. This was my second time here to see if they improved since the first time I came... safe to say, still looking for my go to dessert place cause this place isnt it.... Everywhere else in this market without making this review longer than it already is, has been good. Not Amazing, but a nice experience if your looking to try something new thats...
