National Register visit 262: Claremont Depot 📍110 West 1st Street, Claremont This gorgeous train depot at the southeast corner of the historic Claremont Village district has had three distinct lives: 1) For 40 years beginning in 1927, it was an active station for the Santa Fe Railway, serving the passenger lines between LA and Chicago, plus freight trains dropping stuff off and picking stuff up. Santa Fe ended passenger service to Claremont in 1967, and the Claremont Depot was shuttered for the next 25 years. 2) In 1992, the City of Claremont restored the station and transformed it into a transit hub, with a stop on the new Metrolink commuter rail system. 3) The Claremont Museum of Art took over the building in 2016, after several years as a “museum without walls.” You can still buy Metrolink tickets at the self-service kiosks outside, but now you can roam through a stimulating exhibit while you wait for your train. While the building’s undergone a lot of interior changes over the years, there are some marvelous original details preserved in the former waiting room, especially. Check out the ceiling, the tiles, the churrigueresque decorations around the main entrances, and especially the wooden doors, with the old Santa Fe circle/cross logo carved right into them. Spent some time in the Claremont Lewis museum who was showcasing the work of Ferne Jacobs. Her work is colorful, intricate and interesting. Some of her pieces took 18 months to make. She is a fiber artist who makes sculptures and wall hangings by hand. The museum had two rooms dedicated to her work and also had video of her creative process. A more in depth documentary can be seen on PBS. It was a nice way to spend a Sunday going to the farmers market, having lunch at a local eatery and ending the day in the air conditioned building being inspired by the artwork.

This Museum always has the most interesting shows! It is the kind of place one needs to visit each month. Even if you have seen the show once there is always a detail you missed. It is a real gem! You are in luck if volunteer Doug is in. He is full of knowledge about the artists and current show. Be sure to pick his brain when you visit, that is if you are lucky enough that he’s in when you go! Don’t miss the First Saturday Art Walk when the entire Village opens up for their art, music, artists greet, wine, and more. The Claremont Museum really shines on Art Walk with great live...

What a gem of a little museum! The facility in the old train depot/now Metrolink station is gorgeous! Lots of original architectural details from the wooden window frames, to the period lights, to the beautiful tile work on the floor and walls, you'll feel like you've been transported back through time. They feature new exhibits every 4 months. There's a local art outreach group that works with high school students to promote art and have them do art. The museum is open Fri., Sat. & Sun noon to 4:00 PM. FRIDAYS ARE FREE, so please stop by and see...
