I've been visiting dog parks for over 12 years with my dog, and I would rate Claremont Pooch Park at about 2.5 stars, rounding up to 3. While the park has its positives, there are several areas that need improvement.
Pros:
The park is well-fenced and divided into separate areas for small and large dogs, which is great for ensuring your pet plays with dogs of similar size.
There is plenty of seating for pet owners, including a large shaded area, making it comfortable to watch your dog play and take a break from the sun.
Ample parking is available, and the park is conveniently located in downtown Claremont, which makes it easy to incorporate into a day out or a nice walk around town.
While some people at the park can be problematic, I have also met some wonderful dog owners who make the experience enjoyable.
Cons:
Maintenance Issues: The park is not consistently well-maintained. While sometimes it's relatively clean and mostly free of potholes, other times it's dirty and in need of upkeep. The park closes for two months each year for maintenance, which seems excessive, and yet it's still not maintained regularly. Dog waste bags are also inconsistently stocked, which can be a hassle if you forget to bring your own.
Safety Concerns: Unfortunately, there are often homeless individuals around the park who leave trash, needles, and other hazards. I recommend sticking to the parking lot and the park itself to avoid any encounters.
Aggressive Behavior: I've encountered more than a few instances of aggressive behavior from other dog owners, and on two occasions, it almost led to physical confrontations. I've seen other people getting into arguments, and I’ve had to leave for safety reasons multiple times.
Flea Problem: My dog often ends up with fleas after visiting, especially if he hasn’t been recently treated. It seems to be an issue primarily coming from the small dog area.
Water Fountain: While there is a water fountain for dogs, it's not very clean. It doesn’t seem to be well-maintained, and there’s no way to refresh or clean out the water.
Overall, Claremont Pooch Park has potential, with its good location and basic amenities, but the inconsistent maintenance, safety concerns, and cleanliness issues hold it back. It’s worth visiting if you’re in the area, but I would recommend bringing your own water and waste bags, keeping an eye on your dog for fleas, and being cautious of some of the...
Read morePark is going down hill. Two things is significance, owners are not picking up after tgeir K-9s and water for the dogs has been cut off.
I'm picking up more and more cold poop near where my dog goes. What's worse is that we are stepping in dog pies while walking on the path. The last 6 visits have resulted in poop embedded in the shoes. I'm witnessing more and more owners bringing their dogs into the park and they themselves sit on the bench and put their nose into their phone until they are ready to leave. We are coming here less often because of the poor dog owners.
The water being turned off is troubling. If gives a sense that the park is not valued. This may be negatively influence the behavior of those who come to the park. Broken windows effect.
Old Review: Great local dog park with little and big dog areas, dog drinking fountains, benches, and now evening lights. Most visitors are good responsible dog owners. Parking is good when baseball isn't played next door. If baseball is in season don't hesitate to park on the street just before turning...
Read more2018/10/28 - this park keeps closing for Turf Renovations. The last 3 times i came here they were closed for a 9 month span. So i have been going to Upland's dog park. I finally come back to Claremont Pooch Park, and it's open, but they will be closing it from november 1st to December 1st. The people in charge of this park are stupid. In 2017 this park was shut down for 8 months for Turf Renovations. What's the point if it is closed for more than half the year.
I go to this park 2 or 3 times a week. It is clean, because most people pick up after their dogs, and a few volunteers help keep it clean and one of the volunteers cleans and replaces the tennis ball once or twice a week. The Ontario Rescue is very close to this park as well. So i take a dog from them once in a while, to this dog park to keep them socialized with other dogs and people. So check it out...
