I went here on a Saturday and was able to catch the 1pm tour. Our tour guide Ryan was very informative, engaging, and humorous! We walked through the entire museum, and he highlighted the different topics in a digestible and conversational way. I ended up walking through the entire museum again after the tour ended to read all the little text snippets that we walked past. (Don't worry about missing any details; I came to realize that our guide in one shape or another included all the information in his tour!!) I definitely recommend going to the museum during a tour time! During the tour some of the machines are also turned on which is very impressive to see in action! There is also lots to see outside, so you can easily spend 20+ min walking around. If you're like me who went during the winter, make sure you're bundled up so you don't want to rush inside!

I really enjoyed the museums, especially the old engines rigged to work on electricity and compressed air, and all the moving models of various mining equipment. The folks there obviously love what they do, and it shows in how well kept up the machinery is, and how knowledgeable the staff is about the ins and outs of operating it. The only weird part was, the tour guide kept trying to work conservative politics into the descriptions of mine modernization. My personal favorite was the claim that prohibiting child labor in mines was government overreach that led directly to runaway inflation. By all means, get those kids back underground for 12 hour shifts 6 days a week, and death at 25 from dust inhalation is better than they deserve!

We've been here a few times. Age range of our groups infant, toddler, elementary, middle school, 20's, 30's, 40's. The key to a perfect experience? The tour. 10am and 2pm on Saturdays. You'll be guided around by a volunteer and a mining enthusiast. It's really quite fun and is included with standard admission. You'll get to climb 1 by 1 into the escape vessel created to rescue Chilean miners in 2010. You learn about precious minerals, steam power, and the use of whale blubber and canaries as "advances" way back in the day. The gift shop is what you'd expect at a mining museum. Kids can buy fun rocks, a vial of gold, train whistles...

We came here for Halloween time when they had the pumpkin patch and all the fun stuff for kids to do. They played a giant game of battleship, crawled through tubes, played tetherball, and several other things. Then they picked out some giant pumpkins that we're impressive in size, quality, and quantity. Later we went on the tour and both my 9yos were engaged and interested the entire time. The fact that they have so many functional antiques is worth the trip to see alone. But you can pan for stones and gold in the water troughs and roam the property too.

If you like industrial machines, this is the place to go! There are a variety of functional steam engines and mining equipment with guides available to explain the history and answer questions. They also have an area for kids (of all ages) to pan for gold. This is a very family friendly facility. On the outside 27 acres there is a functional stamp mill and blacksmith shop along with a variety of antique heavy equipment. Watch their website for special events during the summer when this equipment is being operated.
