This is a review of the Highbridge Trail, Gorge Metro Park.
A stunning pic of an overlook on Natural Ohio's Instagram page attracted me to this trail. What Natural Ohio forgot to tell it's Instagram followers is that the place from which the picture was taken is not accessible, at least legally accessible, from the trail. So you can imagine how disappointed I was when I got to the spot on the trail where I was supposed to ascend to get an amazing overlook view of the valley. Not only was I disappointed by the inaccessibility of overlook, no fault to the Gorge Metro Park, but I was also disappointed by the trail. The path of the trail follows the path of rustic power lines that, for me, are an eye soar. Add the gravel path to the power lines and it feels like I was walking along a service road, not in a park. If that wasn't enough, there was an unpleasant smell coming from something nearby (the Cuyahoga River, a skunk, trash? I don't know). Unpleasant visuals and smells put a damper on my park experience. I think the worst park is how the sounds of the Cuyahoga River tempt you from the trail saying, "It's beautiful down hear. The gentle, rustling water is peaceful." The only saving grace to the Highbridge Trail is the shaded trail you can descend to via 100 wooded steps. The vibrant greens of the trees and the sound of the river and birds experienced along this short trail made the 3 mile hike better...

Read moreOur family have been coming to this park for years. Other than a few parks in the Cuyahoga Valley and Nelson Ledges, you are not going to find large rock formations and cliffs like this in many other public places in north eastern Ohio. This place is really cool. The lower trail will take you by the river and waterfall. The upper trail will take you by large towering rock formations and caves. There are pavilions and picnic tables to sit and eat. A modernized restroom. (Not just a portable toilet). There is a dock off the lower trail just before the dam that you can fish off of. It lacks a playground but in my experience kids really enjoy this place. The pictures don't do it justice. It's really surreal being up close to terra firma so massive. It's one of the closest parks we have locally to an experience in mountainous states like in the Colorado's, Appalachia, Cascade mountain states etc.
A Little history about our cave parks : As of the 80's and 90s not many know this but many of the caves in ALL the parks were mostly filled in with trees and dirt or locked off. I actually got to explore many of the caves 30+ years ago as a child. They even gave tours when I was little. I was actually at Nelson ledges and Virginia Kendall a couple times when they were filling in the caves. It happened because people actually died in a few or died trying to...
