Nice cool place. Awesome for sharing information on the original Melanated native African peoples to this american land. Some areas were closed off or unavailable to view or visit during our visit. This place could definitely use more interactive displays and more user friendly features. Also maybe have some live music 🎶 and or prerecorded tunes playing to exhibit different genres and musical styles created by the African American culture who are the innovators of music itself. Maybe even offer some guided tours in addition to the self-guided process. One other important point is please ensure all exhibits, pictures, displays, and artwork etc. at an African American museum only features and shows African American historical figures, their work and achievements. It is not necessary to highlight nor include other cultures in these exhibits because that is not what visitors have come to see if we are visiting an African American museum then we want to see African Americans only! Please be mindful of this when setting up and preparing items for exhibit or even hanging pictures on display for visitors to view. There is enough African American contributions to society that will give you content and material to display for the culture that there is no need to have to utilize another culture in these exhibits. Other cultures and nationalities will be highlighted at their perspective historical museums already by which we can see them and there contributions to history when we choose to visit those museums. And please know other cultural museums do not exhibit not display African Americans whatsoever in there cultural observations. I hope this important information is able to make it to this museums managing directing department that is able to assist with the implementation of these very important updates and changes. Thanks...
Read moreFirst off, this is a great building, beautiful both inside and out, and the layout is effective for creating individual galleries each with their own experience.
We visited for about two and half hours on a Saturday afternoon and still did not see everything. We spent a long time in the gallery of folk art on the first floor, which, although specifically about African American folk art in Texas, is one of the best collections of folk art I've seen anywhere: fascinating and beautiful pieces by inspired artists in a variety of media. We also explored the African American art gallery: pieces varied in quality but were always interesting and generally well-displayed. And the current exhibit of work by Jonas Boekhoudt ("Metropolis") which was engaging -- though sometimes glare from the overhead lights prevented us from seeing the canvases as wholes.
We will be going back to see the other exhibits, one on Freedman's cemetery and one on Sepia magazine.
I was expecting (hoping) that there would be at least one area offering a view of the history of African Americans in the Dallas area. As a new part-time resident, I'm trying to get a handle on the city's people, culture, and history. I almost docked the Museum one star for not providing this, but I guess it's not fair to penalize them for not doing something that they don't claim to do. Still, I wish there was someplace that looked intensively at African American history and...
