Wow! Volusia county and Florida itself has quite the gem in the Daytona Playhouses’s production of “The Drowsy Chaperone”! Don’t let the title fool you, there is NOTHING drowsy about this show or this cast! This cast rivals some of the best I’ve seen including in New York. They have a chemistry and collective energy that you can nearly touch! Their synchronization are key to pulling off the required timing of this tricky and sometimes slapstick writing while also easily drawing you into the heart of these characters and the tender underlying stories. This cast pulls it off perfectly!! I won’t go into detail of the plot but let’s just say the casting is on point, you couldn’t have found a better, more powerful Drowsy/Aldolpho combination (vocally and character wise) and the Bride and Groom are sensational and loveable!! The Narrator carries the show with an impressively large role as he seamlessly tells the story within a story. The butler completely steals the tap dance number and the supporting cast are ALL on point and responsible for so much of the big production numbers and tiny details. Another stand out voice is the young female aviatrix Trix. Now let's talk about live Orchestra!! This adds a professional feel to the show. What a treat when you get the power of orchestra beautifully directed. The playhouse itself is deceptively spacious and well organized. The front lobby just got a face-lift and it has a great view of the Halifax River. They offer all types of wine, beer, and soft drinks as well as a fun raffle. Definitely recommend! And keep the...
Read moreWhile studying near Saint Augustine this month, I decided to look for a fun distraction this weekend, and I found The Daytona Beach Playhouse and its production of “Exit Laughing”.
Written by Paul Elliot, the play tells the story of three middle aged women who are mourning, each in their particular, if rather still unconscious way, the passing of their dearest friend, Mary, with whom they have shared life, and played Bridge, for the last thirty years.
When one of the friends, innocent and playful Millie (played by actress Kathy Thompson —who absolutely STEALS the show!) decides to break into the funerary home after the wake and steals the urn containing the remains of their cremated friend before the burial the next day, chaos ensues.
Under the fear of the possibility that police might come get them for Millie’s crime, a frantic brainstorming session ensues during which a mysterious package is delivered to their doorstep containing a special gift from the deceased herself. Like a Matryoshka doll of sorts, the present continues yielding many others —the ones they needed, and the ones they never knew they did —and yes, that includes a handsome stripper!
It is a fun conversation about life, how routines settle in slowly without our noticing of them, how everything changes, not just our bodies but also the things we’ve held so dear to us, and in the midst of it all, the many ways in which we can continue being...
Read moreRemodeled recently so it is a great place to watch a play now. Easy to park too. Our reviews had over 52 million in the last 12 months. We do not get paid we just love to eat and have fun. We really love the Daytona Playhouse. We have been going to a lot of plays here for the last year and they have really done an excellent job upgrading the entire facility. Every seat has a great view. Be sure to wear a jacket or sweater as it can be very cold inside. The AC is great!!!! Prices are very low so we like to buy a lot of seats and give them to our friends so they can learn about this great venue. They have a lot of VERY talented actors, directors and musicians, lighting folks and front staff that make this a great venue. Parking is free and easy. They do offer candy, chips, soda, beer and wine was well. LOVE this theater. Check out all of our reviews and look at all the photos below. If we do not like it we do no review it so all of the ones you see are places that are fantastic. Follow us if you like. We had over 52 million views in the last 12 months and we thank you for that.
