I wanted to love this place, but the people are so rude and horrible.
Update: Google is bugging me to update my review, for some reason, maybe because I kept going to my class at Spruill despite the negative rating, so here's the update: My opinion has not changed! Rude, hostile, negative, suspicious people. Is it every single person? Of course not, some are lovely. Is it enough to make for an overwhelmingly unpleasant experience? Yes. Does it seem like an institutional culture problem (rather than a few bad apples)? Also yes. I am a fastidious, responsible, considerate, agreeable, compliant student and I don't think I deserve to be treated with such disrespect. It has negatively impacted my art and my mood. I understand how exhausting working with the public can be, but, at the moment you find yourself so burnt out that you are lashing out and harming the people you are supposed to serve, it is time to step aside. Spruill does not foster artists; they do not care about student success or growth. Spruill is a day camp for upper class housewives and retirees and it is a haven for failed artists with bad attitudes who have no choice...
Read moreThis review is more geared towards Amy Gresens, although I equally appreciate Spruill and the classes offered. I have been taking the jewelry and metalsmithing class with Amy Gresens since pre-Covid. I can not speak highly enough about her classes. She has amazing patience, is an excellent educator and so very talented. She is always willing to help me with my many questions and the projects are fun and challenging. I can’t thank Spruill enough for introducing me to Amy and her skills and friendship, as well as the other students in our class. I love her classes so much, I have recruited 2 other friends to take her classes, and they love her teaching as much as I do. I am grateful to have an affordable place to learn and Spruill has a variety of necessary tools for students to use. I also appreciate the open studio option, and am just so thankful for Spruill and Amy for...
Read moreI am completely obsessed with this magical place. Once you arrive you are immediately welcomed by the kind and knowledgeable staff. They are so encouraging and foster individual creativity. The classes not only further your knowledge of the medium you select but they are also a community of like minded creatives. It’s easy to learn a lot from your fellow students too. Spruill is more comprehensive than other art centers I have been to and will support your creative journey at every level. The hours for classes are very generous and will fit any schedule. Everyone is so kind and welcoming and not judgmental about individual expression or skill level. I highly...
