I wish I could give ZERO stars. My family had a horrible experience in this store while visiting ESU for their family weekend festivities. My family looks forward to Halloween every year so we heard that this was a great store to check out and so we did. We were charged one admission for a group of three and ended up spending about an hour or so in the store looking for costumes and decorations. The female associate was very hesitant to help my daughter try on her costume choices, only giving her bits and pieces of the first costume and asking why she needed to try on a second. The associate stood at the dressing room with us (African American) but I noticed other costumers (Caucasian) trying on costumes without an associate standing there watching. She proceeded to keep the costume at the register until we were “done shopping and ready to check out,” and was not happy my daughter decided on her second choice and said “well where did you find the first one so I can put it back.” I don’t think that was our job to look for that. I gathered a few decorations and we finally proceeded to check out. We realized that we dropped our ticket somewhere and the woman who we paid recognized that we did pay the admission fee but the manager(?) came up and gave us a hard time about it. Suggesting that we search the store looking for it, comparing its significance to a plane ticket which was very exaggerated, and saying that we would come back another day after we’ve “found” it to try to get our money back which I then explained to him that we were only visiting the college and from out of town and that our chances of coming back were very unlikely. He was very condescending to my family and after all of that, we decided to leave our things at the register and go home. I am disappointed because I did not care about the silly $10 off, I was just looking forward to getting my decorations and her costume and making the most out of a rainy weekend out of town. They made it seem like not having the ticket was the end all-be all and it just wasn’t a big deal to me. I was ready to pay for my $100+ worth of Halloween stuff but after speaking with the rude manager, that store did not deserve any of my hard earned money. I also didn’t appreciate feeling racially profiled there because we were the only African Americans in the store. Very unfortunate situation and I will NEVER be back to this store while visiting ESU again. Poor costumer service, overpriced Amazon costumes. Take your business elsewhere.
ALSO! The Facebook page for this site says unaccompanied minors have to pay a fee. No fee for adults with children. Why did my family of 25+ older adults have to pay...
Read moreThe first time I came into this shop, the owner was yelling at his staff that they needed to be paying attention and watch every customer that entered the store to make sure no one was entering with large bags. Loudly, so every customer could hear. Not very professional and not a very warm welcome to make your customers feel like you suspect them of being thieves. You can do security and inventory control with a little more subtlety.
I still came back a second time because the store is very cool. Very well organized and well stocked with a large variety of items, though I didn't find what I was looking for. The back of the store has some amazing, unique pieces that are worth admiring and purchasing if you can afford them. Some of the more basic costume stuff feels very marked up, though. Something like a rayon pirate dress that I can find comparable elsewhere for very cheap shouldn't be $50. Some of the other items, like the more Ren Faire type costumes against the walls, seemed priced fairly.
My star rating is mostly based on a recent policy the shop has implemented that I feel is a terrible idea. It is very gate-keep-y towards your casual shopper and prohibitive towards customers looking for something very specific. They are now charging a $10 fee per person to simply enter the store. This is in an effort to force you to make a purchases, it seems, since this fee can apply to your purchase that day. However, if this policy had been in place when I was last at the shop, my $10 would have been entirely wasted. I was ready to drop a good bit of money on what I wanted had I been able to find it there. The owner is assuming that if you're a serious customer he will have what you want in stock but in my case they didn't have it, and what I wanted was simply a gnarly witch hat or something basic I could customize. This $10 cover being applied to your purchase only makes sense in some sort of unreality where the shop has literally everything under the sun and you'll always find what you're looking for.
Frazetta's is such a cool, unique shop that's stands out as something special in the community and it would honestly be a tragedy if Spirit Halloween or Party City manages to push them out because of this very bad policy. I hope they...
Read moreMy experience in Frazetta's Costumes was not a great retail costumer service experience. New York Comic Con is next week. The cosplay outfit that I ordered online will not arrive in time for my planned attendance on Thursday and Friday. I was off today and in town to care for a family issue. Therefore, I entered Frazetta's Costumes with the intention of purchasing a costume. When my son and I entered the establishment this afternoon, two ladies were standing near the entrance. I was excited and said 'hello'. The ladies looked, but did not respond. We went in the back and saw other staff. We were not offered a greeting, assistance, or guidance. My 23 year old son ( an illustrator) noticed a bad 'vibe' quickly, especially since there were very few costumers in the store. We spent about 15-20 minutes in the store. At one point, my son and I picked out a quality cosplay outfit of a Marvel character. As I walked around for the accessory to the costume, we passed and literally stood in front of another staff member, who seemed occupied with hanging items in the middle of the store . After not finding the item on my own, a staff male staff member finally spoke, asking my son if we were ready to 'check out'. At that point, I put the item down and exited the store! Yes, we could have been more proactive with staff. However, we also have other options for purchasing cosplay. My son and I vividly recall a very enthusiastic experience at another store when I purchased another Marvel character cosplay. In addition, I have met a young, female family member of Frazetta at a display table at NYCC years ago. Based on that interaction, I expected a different approach from staff here. Finally, as a mother and son of Color (Afro/Caribbean/Latina - with Locs), we really wondered if our race had an impact on our reception in the store! I would have likely purchased the outfit for $139.00 if we had a different experience in Frazetta's. The online order was more costly. However, Frazetta's appeared to have no interest in me or my money. I hope that this will be a teachable...
