I would give it a VERY SOLID 5.0 out of 5.0 STARS.
PROS: LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the beach, felt VERY safe swimming within the area, assuming its because it was between the brick walls so at last when we went not large waves to speak off (this is a GOOD thing) I LOVE SANDY Beaches and the sand was LOVELY. The park area and swings are awesome for the kids. The light house is great to look at from the beach (next time we'll try to walk over to it and try to climb it if they allow. Free parking, GREAT job Frankfort being accommodating to your guests.
Cons: NONE because I really LOVE THE PLACE AND WANT TO GO BACK!!
Neutral: -There must be something going on with one of the fish population, some were washed up on shore and hindered from the beaches pristine appearance. (Putting in the neutral category as the city of Frankfort won't usually have always to solve mother nature. I have heard of communities buying those beach scraper machines and having people go out in the morning and cleaning up some portions of the beach, I recommend that as food for thought for the city to consider if it is not too cost prohibitive (it will add to the experience).
Conclusion: -I think you can tell from my review I LOVE this place and next time I want to try to rent a place on the beach, and visit more shops!!
Other Items to remember: -This place is only like a 30 min drive to Cristal Mountain Resort so could potentially stay in this area and visit that resort and do some activities there as well, such as ropes coerce, tennis courts, swimming pool, alpine slide, one restaurant, golf, archery,...
Read moreBeen vacationing @ our summer home in Frankfort, a half block from the Lake Michigan beach since 1965. Been many a time when I was the only swimmer in the lake, b/c its pretty cold until `mid-July. But August is when the strong winds come from the SW, kicking up waves that are large enough to body-surf, and the water temp is very comfortable.
I still miss the Ann Arbor RR carferries that used to dock on the Elberta side of Betsie Bay, and they would criss-cross the big lake several times each week...they were named the Viking, the Arthur K. Atkinson(sp?) and the City of Green Bay. They would toot their loud horns twice for departure, and thrice for arrival...day or night.
Oh...and I am very experienced @ finding Petoskey stones alongshore....dry or wet. Have even found them on gravel roads miles inland, and embedded in the town's cement sidewalks. Heard that the lake's water level is very high this spring. IIRC, the last time that it was so high, the waves would crash against the clay infused bluffs, turning the near-shore water a...
Read moreThis is our favorite beach on Lake Michigan! The community is really small and so really picturesque. The beach is laid back and soooo relaxing. As they say, no salt, no sharks, no worries, or is it the other way around. Keep in mind that the waves can get large and powerful when the winds pick up. There's a light house here adding to the tranquil vibe of this beach. We drive from Berea Kentucky every other year or so to take in this natural environment. The water is cold or sometimes very cold depending on what time of the year you dip your toes. There are several local establishments along either side of the road leading in to the beach. Several restaurants, a bagel shop, a brew pub, a micro brewery, an ice ream stand that actually sell soft serve. It may seem like a small thing, but we can't always find it living...
