It has been such a wonderful experience. From the early settlers to our current inhabitants. Going to the harbor History Museum and pulling into the parking lot you can see that there is so much pride taken in the history of the area. Located on the waterfront of the town of Gig Harbor in a picture a setting Stan's the harbor History Museum. Before walking into the door you are greeted by a statue of a fisherman with an extremely large salmon. You are greeted by a fabulous greeter and you can see and exhibit of pieces of iron from Galloping Gertie as well as walking through the door and up the staircase you will go into an area that has Native American history and then history of the early settlers as well as how people make money traded companies that were established within the area. And then you can also see pastimes and a very beautiful Shenandoah is outside and dry dock that is being redone. After you finish that exhibit you can go down into the old school house. This has been such a great experience. As our experience came to a close we entered back into the main 48 of the museum and was greeted by beautiful beautiful artwork. Thank you so much we...
Read moreOne of the best kept small museums that I have visited. We went there unplanned, not expecting anything or having no idea what we would see. We were lucky to get the tour from the director herself while visiting the fishing boat. She had a captivating way of explaining the fisherman's life and how the boat was used, how the engines were reassembled, how the boat was hauled into the hall etc. It certainly has a wow factor to it. All the exhibits were interesting. The story behind how long it took and how much effort was involved in restoring the old fishing boat "Shenandoah", to its current state was very interesting. Very friendly staff. We went in August and the entry was free. The history about the bridge that fell due to high wind and how it was restored was also interesting. There is a light pole near the car parking area from the destroyed bridge which is the only surviving light pole from the old bridge. But for me the highlight was walking into...
Read moreA small museum, but nicely done. Some of the display books need re-doing as the heavy pages are torn and hard to flip. Also, more than average things to try like an accordion, which was fun, but noisy in the hard surfaced rooms. It helped put a face to many of the local names in the area and increased our appreciation of fishing, the harbor and history of the area. Interesting to see some refurbished fishing things and a boat in progress, too. If you go in 2018, your admission fee has been covered by a donor, so that's a sweet bonus!...
