I really wanted to give this place 5 stars, but I have to rate the overall experience.
This was our second visit, and the caves themselves are absolutely breathtaking, truly a fascinating and unforgettable experience. They’re clean, well maintained, and the rangers are incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and genuinely love what they do. You can feel their enthusiasm when they share stories about the history of the caves.
During our first visit, we stayed in a hotel in Cave City and had a great time. This time, we decided to stay at the park lodges and dine there, and that’s where our disappointment began. The food was extremely poor quality but priced like a nice restaurant, and my coffee was served with spoiled milk (thankfully, there’s now a Starbucks). The lodge room we got looked nothing like the pictures. It smelled old and musty, almost moldy, and since we were traveling with a small child, we ended up requesting a refund and going back to a hotel in Cave City.
That said, the park itself is a true gem. The scenery, wildlife, and peaceful atmosphere make it a magical place to visit. We will definitely come back again to explore more of the caves, but we’ll skip the lodges next time.
Please take this review with a grain of salt, as everyone’s experience is different, and maybe we just got the unlucky room. I’m sharing this mostly as feedback for the park, because the caves deserve the same level of care and dedication extended to the accommodations and dining experience. After long drives and hours of hiking underground, visitors naturally want a good meal and a comfortable rest, and that part needs...
Read moreWe made an impromptu trip to Mammoth Cave NP for a couple of days of camping. There was little traffic heading into the park and zero wait to get into our campsite. There are only 2 RV plug-in campsites, but our primitive site was level and well shaded. The bathrooms and water were fine, but pay showers were in another building about 1/2 mile away.
As experienced hikers, we found the trails to be challenging but poorly marked. It didn't help that trails near the visitors center were under construction land closed. Still, we had some fun, short hikes.
The visitors center was packed with info about the caves and the staff was helpful. We reserved a cave hike for the next afternoon.
Our guide met us at the cave hike starting point and explained that our group of about 20 would hike by lantern. 5 lanterns were passed out and we hiked a short distance to the cave entrance.
The cave hike wasn't difficult and our guide (Ranger Eric) was friendly and fun. There wasn't really much to see, but his explanations of how the trail was created by slaves and CCC workers was very informative. After 3 hours underground, we emerged into the light and enjoyed a short bus ride back to the visitors center.
Overall, Mammoth Cave offers a unique and quiet National Park experience. It was nice to be away from the crowds we...
Read moreMammoth Cave is truly breathtaking! We were so captivated by the beauty and mystery of this place that we ended up taking not one, but two tours to make sure we could see as much as possible. Each tour offered a unique perspective of the cave’s stunning rock formations, massive chambers, and intricate passageways.
The guides were knowledgeable and passionate, sharing fascinating history and details that brought the cave to life. From grand, cathedral-like spaces to narrow, winding tunnels, every part of the cave was an adventure. Both tours were well worth it for anyone who loves nature and history.
If you’re considering a visit, I highly recommend exploring as much of Mammoth Cave as you can – each part has something unique to offer! It’s an unforgettable experience that’s not...
