The Electric Dusk Drive-In is more than a novelty, more than a hip-but-classy nod to a bygone era...it's a super rad ROMANTIC EXPERIENCE. The films are projected onto an inflatable screen which hovers over a former fashion district parking lot. It's backdrop is Downtown L.A.'s skyscrapers, seeming to burst from the old skyline. The whole thing is a beautiful display of entropy. It's absolutely brilliant. From the moment I arrived, I felt like I'd stumbled upon something fantastic by getting off at the wrong freeway exit...or that a friend had invited me here, and that all of the other patrons could be friends of friends. The Snack Shack feels like a backyard BBQ set-up, in that it's unassuming but manages to crank out a crowd's worth of delicious hotdogs, burgers, and chicken sandwiches in like, 5 minutes. A home-baked desserts tray is lit by the yellow glow of a carnival-style popcorn machine. I drank a Perrier that had been in a cooler full of ice. Standing under an old-west seeming street lamp near the restrooms (which are very clean for port-a-potties) I suddenly felt like this gem had always been here...and that I'd always been here, and that the city had grown up around us both. It's magical to see a film you love with a fun but respectful audience who loves it as much as you do. There's a sense of belonging here. Every employee talks to you like they know you, and they're hosting a party that only happens once a year...but apparently this happens about every other weekend! The sound was crisp, the intermission was chocked full of free raffle giveaways, and the enter/exit procedure was easy peasy. A labor of love always gets me "right there", but this ingenious venue makes me want to kiss this place right on the face. A bunch! If you love movies, or even just like them a lot, you've just GOT to...

Read moreWould have been 5-stars if they hadn't FALSELY ADVERTISED on their Eventbrite that "We will space out cars to make sure folks can always maintain 6 feet of distance." This was an ABSOLUTE LIE. All the cars were packed so tightly that we could barely open our doors even if we wanted to get out.
Convertible cars were allowed to watch the film with their tops down and no masks. I watched a group of make what were probably TikToks between the cars and groups of people huddled together on the sidelines, all without the employees saying a word. The employees weren't even social distancing as they claimed they would either.
Every one has different levels of comfort right now, so I understand if the aforementioned isn't a problem to some people. But the operators need to be HONEST and advertise properly so people who aren't comfortable with their set up don't show up and immediately feel very uncomfortable and...
