Chinook Pier is one of the little gems of Grand Haven. It's not too out of the way, and during the summer it's a perfect place to visit. It's easy to overlook though because most people only focus on the train when they pass by... What they don't know is that to the left of the train are a number of little shops lining the pier. Everything from a miniature golf course, ice cream shops, rental shops, and gift shops line the pier but because of the other shops in front you can't really see most of what's behind. Almost all of the stores close during the late fall and winter, only opening during the spring and summer seasons, but even then it's a beautiful place to visit on a clear day. On Wednesdays and Saturdays (I think) you can even enjoy the occasional Farmers Market next to the train. This spot is just great... :) Update: In the years since I first posted this review, much has changed (especially since the pandemic). Many shops have closed down, or downright disappeared. The farmers market is still going strong, and the park areas are relatively untouched, but I thought any visitors should know that the pictures I posted of the pier shops are no longer represenitive of what it looks like today.

We stayed in slip #1 at the GH Municipal Marina (literally "back stage" against the amphitheatre, lol!) for a few days, and then at the GH Yacht Club after that, both of which are right along Chinook Pier and Park. It's incredible what Grand Haven has done to make their waterfront a great destination! There are food trucks serving all manner of good food, a splash pad for the kids, even ping pong and cornhole. And with the Pere Marquette train display, there's a good dose of history too. Be sure to catch the light and music display at 10pm each night.

Beautiful walk along the pier past the lighthouse to the point where you can see the separation of the river water and lake water (more blueish). Nice breeze across the water keeps it a bit cooler even on a hot day.

Very nice place to take a walk. Though it's a very busy pier, I had few complaints in terms of disruptive people, making it a very calm area next to the water. Of course, the old train is a very nice addition that adds character to the area as well. Overall, I would strongly recommend this place for anyone, whether you are a tourist or a local, it's a great place for a walk, and there are many good places to eat at...
