My family and I spent four days over spring break at the Lazy Bear cabin in Hochatown. The cabin could be really nice if it had some maintenance issues taken care of and some deep cleaning done. The outside of the cabin - handrails, deck, furniture and the walls of the cabin were all covered with a green dust, which I assume was tree pollen. It could easily have been washed down to make it more presentable and where the dust/pollen didn’t come off on your hands and clothes when touched. The kitchen was the most ill-equipped kitchen I have ever seen. Minimal tools and prep dishes and cookware. The cookware was warped, scratched and the handle on one fry pan was almost coming off. All of the dishes - plates, bowls and cups were chipped and ugly. There was not a complete set of flatware. There was one really nasty looking sponge under the sink for cleaning. The detergent dispenser on the dishwasher is broken, so the first load we washed didn’t get clean. Handles on the cabinet drawers were loose or broken and some drawers were broken. The main bathroom had a big wad of hair in the drain and sand on the floor of the shower. The box spring in the main bedroom was badly stained and totally visible as soon as you walked into the room - very off putting! Also there were stains on the sheets on that bed. The ceiling fans were dusty and the light fixtures were also dusty. The game room had a pool table with a big rip in the top, only two of the pool cues had tips on them, there was no sand for the shuffleboard table and only two darts to play. We couldn’t get the ceiling fan to work in the living room and there were several lights burned out. Th3 cover to the vent return for the HVAC system fell off and we found that the filter was so dirty that it was evident it hadn’t been changed in a long time. Outside in a tree was a shredded hammock hanging that could not be used. For the money that we paid per night, I would have expected better accommodations. It’s sad that this property has been allowed to...
Read moreWe stayed in The Coach House cabin for my 30th birthday and we had a blast!! I didn't take many pictures inside but honestly the pictures on the rental website already tell that story. It's a gorgeous cabin and the owners have taken great care to fill it with pretty much anything you could need or want! I think the kitchen had more utensils and dishes than I do at home! It was little things like metal marshmallow roasting sticks hanging on a tree by the fire pit, air freshener spray in the bathrooms, and even a drawer in the kitchen with decks of cards, dominoes, candles, and pens.
We spent most of our weekend in or at the cabin and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. My boyfriend and I split the cabin with my brother and his wife. My daughters loved their "couch bed" and the cabin was comfortably roomy for all of us.
Just a heads up, the roads are VERY STEEP. We drove in at night and at one point the road looked like it just...dropped off. It didn't obviously, and in the daylight it was still steep, but nowhere near as scary. Also, depending on your carrier, you might not have a lick of cell service anywhere in Broken Bow or surrounding areas. I think most of the cabins have Wifi, so you should prepare for your destinations map-wise before you leave the cabin. GPS will continue to work even when there is no actual service, but it won't be able to search for new locations.
To stock up on supplies, there is a walmart in Idabel about 16 mi away. I think there's one in broken bow but it's not a supercenter.
As you can see in one of the pics, there are other cabins nearby. I saw vehicles at all of them but never actually saw or heard people. It didn't take away from our experience at all. All in all, this is one of the best trips I've ever taken and we enjoyed our...
Read moreSo far we have stayed at Pebble Creek and Wild Horse cabins. Both were very nice, although Wild Horse was a bit of a wild ride (no pun intended) to get to. It would be great if they would have a sign when you come thru the entrance telling you which cabins are which way, and if they would have such signs at the beginnings of the little side roads. Pebble Creek was fairly easy to find, but Wild Horse was a bit tedious, and you have to go up a rather steep hill that lands into a gravel driveway. Yikes! You don't even realize the cabin is there until you go over the other side of the hill and see the sign in the yard. In my little car, that was a bit of a nail biter. All of that aside, this company really knows how to build/appoint vacation cabins. One of the main things that keeps me going back to Sundown cabins is that there are no hidden fees. What you see on the reservation page is what you pay (no extra cleaning fees, etc. like some other cabin rental companies charge). On my first stay I even got an unexpected discount, because of the number of nights I booked. At Pebble Creek, the fridge was not working properly and we had bought a ton of groceries on our way to the cabin. They were quick to have a repairman out within a few hours, so crisis averted. Long story short, Sundown Cabins are a safe bet...we plan to stay at the Clearwater Creek cabin next! (P.S. If you are looking for a more secluded cabin, make sure you pay attention to the little clues in the cabin description...for instance, "This cabin is located near ...cabin, so it's perfect for an extended family booking together!" actually means, this cabin is located close to...
