My favorite church, hands down! From the architecture to the service there is nothing I don't like.
The main church is open with extremely high ceilings covered with saints and gold leaf. However, unlike a lot of other churches the walls are cream, not blue. Creating a more uplifting atmosphere.
The icons truly come to life when they have the main overhead lights off. The church receives plenty of natural light, but they turn on the main when the divine liturgy starts, which bathes everything in a uniform glow. But when the lights are off, the sunlight bounces off all the gold leaf and it looks like the saints are on fire!
St. Basil also has a small side chapel that is used during the week which has the dark blue walls which is beautiful in its own right.
Sunday service has two parts, the orthros and divine liturgy. I love worshiping during the orthros. It's at 8 am so no one is there and the lights are off. But by 10:20 there are people pouring out of the church.
The services are conducted in Greek and English. Usually whatever is said in Greek is repeated in English, so you don't miss anything. But is adds a little bit of mystery as the deacon thurificates while there is Greek chanting in...
Read moreI am not a member of the church, but have had a chance to tour it during their Greek festivals, and have watched it progress for the last 10 years as a nearby resident. We are so happy to have this wonderful religious community in our area. The people there have a great sense of community and you can tell there is a real bond among the members of the congregation. They are actively involved with the greater community, and are open and welcoming. The "new" church building is beautiful...a far cry from the boringly corporate megachurches of the area. It's a large but gracefully designed byzantine-esque structure, and the interior is amazingly beautiful. The typical eastern orthodox iconography is exceptional, and the wonderful interior design complements it well. The church is pretty much the anti-megachurch...it has a great community of devoted people (unlike the you're-just-a-number feeling and "greed is good" vibe you get from some of the other area megachurch congregations), a welcoming (but not aggresively prosltyzing) approach to the greater community, and some really superb cooks:) Congrats to St. Basil's, and thank you so much for being such a great part of our...
Read moreWent today for the Greek Festival. Was truly amazing. Great food, great entertainment, things for kiddos, market was nice. All good things.
Took the ‘tour’ of the church. Ok. It’s beautiful inside. Had Bishop Luke or Lucas giving the ‘tour’. Which isn’t a tour basically him telling you about the history of the church as whole and it’s pretty interesting. But what I really learned from him is that he has serious envy of New Yorkers who apparently are only good for having the person who painted the icons and did the wood work for the church . Boston is ‘weird’ in a lot of ways because he’s unable to understand English with an accent and they vote weird too. Hey Bishop. Don’t tell me your political views. That’s not what church is for!!! I’m not a fan of bashing other people just for some cheap laughs. As a native New Yorker I was offended.
Oddly enough would have totally considered going as we are new to the area but was completely turned off by the...
