It’s a very nice center and I met a friendly driver and his mule-drawn wagon out front. The only caveat I would offer is to be prepared that the Presidential Library is a bit of a drive from the Visitor Center. The library is on a beautiful sweeping green space near-ish. The town of Independence was very charming, so it was fun seeing it. Also, as you search with your navigation, be VERY specific because about 1000 streets and buildings seem to be named Truman. I think it’s great they are so fond of him.

They refused to let me inside Truman's house, even though I got there at 4:20. The last round is at 4:30. The employee of the visitor center Jeff Wade told me to come tomorrow. Although I told him I was leaving town today. And he was supposed to let me in today. Especially since I had a ticket. Very poor service!!!

A bit disappointed...no buildings are open for tours, but the compound, though small, is well groomed. The outdoor buildings (outhouse and small barn) were overgrown and falling apart. We were expecting to spend a few hours here, but were done within 15 minutes as there wasn't a whole lot to see.

I worked at a nursing home just down the street we had to go away from the proberty to smoke on our breaks and lunch. I took a walk on my break and I ended up Infront of this big beautiful house. One day this little elderly lady came out for the mail. We begin to chat everyday for about a month. One day one of the other nurses aids asked were I went everyday when I told her she turned white as a sheet. She said you have tea with Mrs Truman. Yeah why? She was shocked that I didn't know who Mrs Truman was. You must she this home Mrs Truman was a beautiful caring loving woman. To me she was just another person...That was many years ago in the 1970s...Never...

Probably the worst visitor's center I've been too. The ranger was not friendly or helpful. She didn't tell us about other parts of the site (Noble Home) that were could visit without a tour ticket. There are no displays about Truman in the visitor's center. There is a 12 minute video about Truman and his wife, but that's all it's about, nothing about him growing up or his presidency or anything like that, so don't expect that. The gift shop is pretty good. This is probably the smallest visitor's center I've been to and there just wasn't much there and it's a ways from the actual home so it's...

A good place to start your Truman tour in Independence. National Park staff is knowledgeable and happy to share info. The movie is short and gets you in the spirit of the times Truman lived in, putting some perspective on his hometown. Various artifacts of his are displayed; a case of his favorite soda, clothing, and several photos are also worth a look. If you would like to tour the Truman's home, tickets must be obtained at the visitor's center. The tickets are free but they have a limited amount available each day,...
