Courthouse Exchange – Independence, MO My wife and I recently went here for date night with some friends—who, despite their local foodie knowledge, had never heard of this hidden gem. I’m here to spread the word. Stepping down those stairs beneath the Independence Square feels like walking into a time capsule. The Courthouse Exchange has been around since 1899, making it one of the oldest operating restaurants in Missouri. Tucked below street level, the space is filled with carved rock walls, old brick, wood columns and beams, tin ceilings, and vintage photos that truly set the tone. We ordered pulled pork macaroni, onion rings, fried chicken, and a tasty adult drink—and wow. Everything was delicious. The drinks were on point, and the menu lined with old photos of Independence added a great local touch. We especially loved the shirts the staff were wearing with “Judge and Jury” printed on the back—such a fun nod to the courthouse history. This place has roots deep in Independence history. It’s been a local hangout for over a century, located right next to the Jackson County Courthouse, where Harry Truman once served as county judge. Independence itself was the starting point for the Oregon, California, and Santa Fe Trails, so it’s no surprise that a spot like this carries so much charm and significance. Date night verdict: We’ll definitely be back. The food, the history, and the atmosphere made it one of our favorite spots so far. If you haven’t been—go. It’s a piece of Missouri history and a seriously tasty place to grab a meal.

A disappointing meal in an underground space with loads of character and cheerful yet unhelpful service. The hamburger was fine; nothing worth returning for. My side was the recommended mashed potatoes. They tasted like they came from a box (although they're said to be made from scratch). I should've opted for the french fries. My buddy's pork tenderloin plate looked beautiful but didn't have much flavor. It suffered from the same school cafeteria mashed potatoes. On the plus side, he said the green beans were great and he devoured them. We decided to order dessert, since a good dessert can salvage an otherwise mediocre experience. I got the bread pudding, which was oddly dense and bland. My buddy's German chocolate pie was just okay. We only had about two bites of each dessert. When our server asked if we wanted to go boxes for the desserts (fair question), we said we thought they weren't good, to which she made no reply. It was the first time we've gotten dessert that lowered the overall enjoyment of the meal. Pretty disappointing lunch for $58. Considering the restaurant is right across the street from the busy courthouse, it was fairly empty throughout the lunch window. As a nearby merchant shared with me, "When I want good food, I leave Independence." And that's just sad.

910/5/24 Iv been told to come here for the food. So I showed up for lunch . Start off saying, if you hate stairs and have trouble with them like me . Either don't come here because it's in the basement of the building. I got the plaintiff chicken dinner. Mash potatoes and green beans. Chicken has a great honey glaze iv never had anywhere! But... The chicken was dry as a biscuit. Mashed potatoes was chunky and great! Green beans was great! But . All in all was a waste of money and time.. The sweet tea was not ont eh sweet side and that's ok. The soda from the bar was actually ok. Maybe too much ice. The basement you walk into at first is a bar. But on the side and back was tables. Very low light, reminds me of a old speak easy. Bathrooms very clean. Price for two for lunch $42. Not coming back but cool experience.

We used to love this place but the service is really awful and the last 3 times I've been there. I got food poisoning from three different items. My family and I went out last night. To enjoy some live music edit took me over thirty minutes to get two drinks.. The bar attender told me she couldn't make a drink. So I had to go downstairs.. I went downstairs and there was six or seven servers talking to each other standing there.. They didn't acknowledge me or ask me if I needed anything. And I was very polite and had to ask them for my drinks. It took about 10 minutes to actually get the drinks and I watched them. Walk around and talk to each other about this in that. The place didn't have a single person in the restaurant and there was very few people upstairs.. I used to serve and run kitchens and bartender. It was single handed lee one of the worst servicing experiences i've ever experience myself. The staff was kind of rude to everybody there. I don't wanna say any inappropriate words, but that's all that came to mind. And all my family kept talking about it. When I came upstairs with the drinks, the bar tender followed behind me a few minutes later with the very drink that she told me she couldn't make.. I don't know what the staff's problem is with the customers, but it wasn't very welcoming.. The band was really good. But the drinks were awful. I had to make the drink better myself. I just couldn't believe there were so many people standing around just ignoring everybody. They did not seem like they wanted customers there. I hope the next time my family comes here that we're met with a more appropriate staff who actually wants to serve they're customers and is a tentative to their customers. They obviously will read this. And know exactly who's saying it, Because I was the only damn customer standing there.. Even my guest that it showed up there to meet me were whispering in my ear. And asking me why they weren't serving anybody. I even had to ask my family to not be rude to them. Simply so they didn't do something like spit in our food or in our drinks or something.. I even tipped them very well. With each drink. Merely to appease them to not sabotage my family's experience. But courthouse, exchange, you need to do better and you need to have a talk with your night staff.. All of those women were extremely rude. There wasn't really anybody there. And they made all of their guests. Wait a very long time for annie drink or accommodation. I waited twenty minutes for a single beer when nobody was ordering drinks. I made sure to wait that nobody was ordering drinks. I had to watch and tip toe and my drink. Orders just cannot piss off the bartender. My family made a good time out of it. But I won't recommend this place to anybody. And i've most certainly won't eat their food. I'm not sure that they're actually cleaning out the greece traps or if the food handling is just terrible. But it is a code of conduct that we don't eat there anymore. Food poisoning every time. So be warry when you go in here. The staff will make you feel like you are a Burden to them. It will take forever to get your drink and your food will probably not be very fresh.. I've never been in a restaurant where they made me feel like. I was a burden to give them money.. I was super polite to every single one of them the entire night also. I'm not sure who runs the place. But maybe h r should come down and you guys should play some videos for your staff on how to treat the customers.. Money is a good thing for you so our customers. Without them you have nothing. I know that all of the staff working last night. Will remember who I am. And they will remember how polite I was to them. And how well I tipped them. And if they think about it, they will remember how long it took to actually get me The three drinks that I...

They may have been short staffed tonight, but the attitude of the server was a big turn off. She acted like she was being put out by us using the patio when neither of us in our party could make it down the stairs to the basement area. I called ahead to see if patio was open and explained why we couldn't make it downstairs. Later on after we were already seated on the patio, Michelle, our server, let us know that there was a back entrance with a street level entrance and more parking. Why didn't she explain that when I called the first time when i told her why we were asking about the availability of the patio area. We definitely would have chosen that option. The "veggie" soup that Michelle said was the soup of the day, was actually chicken noodle soup and not veggie at all. The one soup my 95 year old mother doesn't like. She said the 1/2 sandwich she got was good. I ordered her coffee making sure to ask for creamer because I was trying to save Michelle some steps as by this time she made us both feel bad about the extra work we were causing her making her come up to the patio. After she brought our food we didn't see her almost 25 minutes until she brought up our check. That was the only time she came to "check" on us. If ya'll don't want people to use the patio, then don't open it. We shouldn't be made to feel guilty for using it. My mom paid 11.00 for a half of a BLT since she couldn't eat the soup or drink the coffee because she never got her creamer. When Michelle ran up, dropped our check off, she didn't even stay long enough to get the payment. She practically ran back to the door and disappeared. We waited another 10 minutes and we just wanted to leave so I made my way down the stairs which caused me great pain. Waited almost 10 minutes to pay the bill to which she never said thank you, come again, ask me how things were, nothing. She was so pissed that we were using the patio that it showed in every word and every movement. It was very rude, unprofessional and disappointing to say the least. We won't be...

Ate here today with my family and it is certainly the last. I ordered the half soup half sandwhich The one option for soup was potato soup and out of the three sandwhich options, I chose to go with grilled cheese. Can't really go wrong with A grilled cheese sandwhich, right? Well apparently you can. My half of a grilled cheese sandwhich was just toasted bread with what was obviously a microwaved slice of kraft-single consistency cheese. No butter/mayo/ etc for adhesion, just completely dry. What's more is that the piece of cheese was not evenly distributed inside the bread, and like they only used half of a slice, there was barely any cheese in the sandwhich. My husband politely told the server and asked for it to sent back. The server was less than understanding and told him "that's what it's supposed to look like". She grudgingly took it back to the kitchen and while we waited I just had my soup (like many reasonably minded grilled cheese lovers, I was hoping to be able to dip my sandwhich into my soup before it got cold). The second sandwhich she brought out was exactly the same as the last one, except this time the bread slices weren't lined up together. I accepted that this was a bad dining experience and just ate the sandwhich. The server was also rude the entire time and the food was too expensive for what it is, especially when they can't even make a proper basic grilled cheese. It also didn't help that I had to reeeaaallly season my potato soup with salt and pepper, and I normally never reach for the salt.

Seriously though, that grilled cheese was soul crushingly terrible as someone who loves a good simple grilled...
