I have been a google fiber subscriber for the past 1.5 years. Initially when I found out I could get fiber, I was really excited at the thought of being able to get affordable and fast speeds in my area. I had previously less than ideal experiences with other service providers in the past so was looking forward to some potentially improved experiences with Google.
From the get go, the process seemed simple enough, however that was where I was wrong.
The hardware that Google is using (Nest Pros) is vastly inferior to all other options on the market from other service providers. a few examples are = poor connection, slow connection, inconsistent connection. These are almost all related to the poor hardware that you are forced to use with Google. The other alternative is to buy your own equipment = but that sort of defeats the purpose of looking for an affordable option.
In my first location I used it in, I was in a 2 bedroom single story condo. Very small place around 1100 square feet. With the nest in multiple rooms in the house, could not a consistent connection at all. Fiber claims up to 1 GIG speeds wired in. I was only able to get max 780 Mbps wired in BUT it was never consistent with constant drops. During work calls I was also constantly getting disconnected due a poor connection (both wired in and wifi). Finally I gave up trying with the google hardware and I went to Costco and bought a router. You could tell an immediate change. I was able to get a max 980 Mbps wired in and an impressive 876 Mpbs on my newer wifi devices (such as my phone).
When I moved to a new location, I got fiber again thinking maybe things have gotten better. Unfortunately, nothing has changed. In my new place which is a 2 story townhouse, it is much worse. plugged directly in, I was only able to get 450 Mbps and best wifi connection was around the same. Throughout the house however, wifi was nonexistent as low as 10-20 Mbps and often times dropping connection. At this rate, dial up connections would even be faster.
Even after contacting customer support in both instances, it was dead ends. Tech support is limited to the hardware in which they are asked to use by Google. And I was given no options except to spend my own money to get a much better performing internet connection in my home. They even sent out a "tech support manager" to oversee the work that was being done, but ultimately they were unable to fix it and I was essentially told to deal with it or change service providers.
Eventually I had to take matters into my own hands and do my own research, setup my own equipment and run my own home network using google fiber. Sadly enough, I now have to house a couple of nest pros which are now just paper weights taking up space in my garage cabinet.
If you're in the Irvine area, you're pretty much given only a couple of options with Google Fiber being one of them. The low quality customer support + horrendous hardware you are asked to use makes Google Fiber nearly unusable. If I was less tech savvy and less stubborn, I would likely still be sitting here with a slow and spotty connection.
Best of luck to anyone who is still struggling with their Google Fiber service and fair warning to anyone who doesn't have fiber and is considering it still after reading this lengthy review. You've...
Read moreI am so very dissapointed in Google. They convinced my development to come in early and convert to their services so before my other company account expired I let them in. They cut holes in my walls and the just screwed in the old drywall with openings without drywall repair. They said they would be back for that and never came back 3 scheduled times. I finally asked the management at my development that recommended them and they said they would repair it. I had a payment due and called to pay it yesterday for some reason it’s off of autopay when and I told them I needed to make a payment and change my email, they refused to take a payment over the phone and weren't allowed to. I was told by two agents they would change my email and neither could figure out how so I couldn’t make a payment on the website because I couldn’t reset my email and password without them first changing my email. After several hours and many disconnections due to AI asking for a survey before the call was over I told the rep when she called me back to credit me and cancel the account if I can’t make a payment but only if u credit me first. This am I got a nice man that said the last agent last night ( lady) had suspended my account and hadn’t given me any credits I was promised. He also said he couldn’t take payment and I couldn’t make one because the account was now suspended. I told him I’d asked previously for credits as did their tech guy last year due to faulty equipment and no credits for months. Now no credit again and no way to change my email because they don’t know how and no way to make a payment in the website without changing my email. I normally go to sleep at 8 pm and it was around 11 pm and I had eye surgery this am at 8 am. The last lady last night was very rude and I was left even with the nice customer service man today without help. I no longer want the account and want my full balance credited. There is zero customer retention or help with this company and they think the inability of the agents to take payments protects the client ( per the agents) ??!! Terrible customer service due to their set up. I told them if they send this balance to collection and I can’t make a payment no fault of my own or have service I will dispute it and I may contact...
Read moreThe worst service horrible connection terrible customer service. I’ve had G Fiber for 3 months. Started off techs showed up and without notice when I wasn’t home and installed the exterior box on the opposite side of my home that my office is in. My office is where I need the best connection. They entered my property backyard unannounced basically trespassed and installed the exterior box. Fine I accepted it. Then the tech came and told me because of where they installed my box my only option is to install their jack in my 8yr olds daughter’s room. Fine I need internet I had no choice. Now my daughter has a jack in the wall and router on the floor since we didn’t layout her room to be an internet hub. I have had horrible internet connection it is constantly dropping service outages and low speeds while I am working from home. I’ve called numerous times and they’ve sent new equipment new router a tech to look at the jack mind you everything is brand new only has it for two months at this time. To be told that my neighborhood is know by the Google fiber team to have terrible service and they’ve been working on it for “YEARS”. Would have been nice to know before I switched. Now I’m requesting for the jack to be moved to my office so I can hardwire in and hopefully finally get the internet speeds I need for work. I’ve called 7 times each time I’m told something a little different but always told now no they won’t move it even though they trespassed on to my property without me knowing and forced me to accept where they are installing my internet jack. Worst company ever don’t not use...
