Decca Live is, without question, a triumph for downtown Jacksonville’s nightlife. The bookings are truly stellar; the musical variety is excellent, catering well beyond the expected bass-drop crowd, and the sound system absolutely earns its praise. If you’re here strictly for the artists and the high-fidelity vibrations, you’re winning.
However, navigating the social and thermal landscape of this venue requires a level of tactical preparation usually reserved for arctic expeditions.
Let's start with the temperature control in the main downstairs bar area. It is frigid. And I don't mean pleasantly air-conditioned; I mean the kind of bone-chilling cold that makes you question whether they accidentally piped in nitrogen gas instead of HVAC. But after spending three minutes calculating the energy output needed to maintain a core body temperature against a heavy dose of exogenous substances, I realized the brilliant, terrible truth: The temperature is set for the clientele, not the comfort of normal, non-euphoric civilians. This is a chillingly effective energy expenditure equation designed to prevent the EDM masses from literally melting onto the floor. Bring a faux-fur stole. Bring mittens. Hell, bring a little alpaca companion to cuddle.
Now, for the personnel:
The bartenders are the absolute coolest people in the entire city, full stop. They are fast, talented, empathetic, and possess that rare ability to make you feel seen even when you're three rows deep in a crowd asking for something complicated. They deserve every last penny of the tip I can't give them (more on that tragedy later).
The security team is a mixed bag. On the one hand, you have the massive, professional, granite-faced gentlemen who handle actual crowd safety with quiet authority—they are excellent. On the other hand, there are the numerous young men who patrol the mezzanine and stairwells with the self-importance of Roman emperors, looking down their noses at anyone holding a phone. Gentlemen, we are all here to listen to a DJ or an indie band. We know you are very cool and have a lanyard, but please, dial back the theatrical flexing by about 75%.
As for the bar manager, there is a distinct, low-level aura of annoyance emanating from that office. It feels like an insurmountable hurdle has just appeared in my path when they’re around the bars.
Finally, we must address the financial crime of the century: The Cashless Policy.
Decca Live, this is 2025. You are an entertainment venue. You are designed to facilitate transactions for services rendered, often in large volumes, quickly, and anonymously. By refusing to accept cash, you are effectively mandating that every single dollar I spend on a $16 cocktail must now be digitally traceable. This is a terrifying, slippery slope toward complete IRS visibility into my life choices, and I refuse to have my Friday night frivolity itemized on a 1099 form.
Worse, it decimates the potential for true generosity. I want to reward that amazing bartender with a crisp $20 for remembering my order and getting it to me in 45 seconds flat. Instead, I’m forced to navigate a system that offers pre-set, algorithmically determined tipping options. This is a moral failure.
Decca is a visually stunning, acoustically perfect venue. Go for the music and the spectacular bartenders. Just wear six thermal layers and prepare to have your entire spending history analyzed by the federal government.
As a local enthusiast of live music, tax avoidance, and comfortable indoor temperatures I give it 4 stars for Jax, and 3 for just about anywhere else. Bump the AC temps up 5 degrees Fahrenheit and i’ll bump this...

Read moreSo, Decca Live—do you have an elevator or not? 🤔
Friday night, I decided to check out the newest nightclub in the city, Decca Live. They were celebrating March birthdays and offered me free admission with complimentary drinks from 10 to 11 PM.
When I arrived, I got inside, grabbed a drink from the bar, and had a good start to the night. The bartender didn’t notice my wristband and made me a drink that wasn’t covered under the promotion, but no big deal—I just paid and tipped.
About 30 minutes later, while waiting for my brother to arrive, I asked a security guard where the bathroom was. He told me the only restroom was upstairs—not just a few steps up, but a lot of stairs. I told him I wouldn’t be able to make it up there, and he reassured me that there was an elevator. He pointed me in the direction of it, so I walked over.
When I got to the area, I asked the security guards stationed there about the elevator, explaining that I needed to use the restroom. Out of the three guards, one told me there was no elevator, and another said I couldn’t use it. I asked if there was at least a bathroom downstairs, and they all told me no—the only one was upstairs.
Confused, I went back to the original security guard and told him what happened. He was just as confused as I was and tried to call a manager for assistance, but no one answered. At that point, I told him not to worry about it because I would just have to leave—I wasn’t going to make it up those stairs.
As I was walking out, one of the security guards told me, “If you leave, you won’t be able to re-enter.” I replied, “Well, I need to use the bathroom, and I can’t make it upstairs, so I guess I don’t have a choice.” Then I asked, “If I were in a wheelchair, what would I do?”
So I just want to know—do you actually have a downstairs bathroom? Do you have an elevator that guests can use? Because both of these things matter when it comes to accessibility.
If you know me, you know Auntie Outside is all about plus-size positivity, good vibes, and making sure spaces in the city are inclusive and accessible to everyone. This experience rubbed me the wrong way, and personally, I won’t be back until...
