Officially the John T. Alsop Jr. Bridge when it was named in 1957, it carries US-1 and US-90 over the St. John's River near downtown Jacksonville Florida. It was named after the mayor who served from 1923 to 1937 and again from 1941 to 1945. It opened to traffic in 1941. It is a vertical lift bridge and has four lanes for traffic and pedestrian walkways on each side and a fantastic view of the city skyline. Read moreI have always loved this bridge. I run across this bridge during some of the Jacksonville races. It is one of the older bridges in Jacksonville. They have made some improvements on this bridge, by painting it. The center part of the bridge has grading and you can see the river below, a little scary if you have never seen this before. When a boat need to get thru, they sound there horn and the center part of the bridge raises from both ends, making the road stay horizon as it raises. Really cool to watch. Read moreThe Second bridge of Jacksonville connects the North to the South banks going North to South allowing for photography of sun/moon rises/sets from either side. With now a cement bridge like river walk along both banks well lit and colorful and with a long exposure a mirror/creamy reflective river. Great place to take photos. Very pretty at night.
