Makai Golf Course in Princeville holds a special place in my heart. From the moment you step onto the course, the views of the Pacific Ocean, the verdant mountains, and the pristine coastline take your breath away.
Each hole tells its own story. The layout, a work of art by the maestro Robert Trent Jones Jr., challenges both the mind and technique. The Bermuda grass, the ocean winds, and the undulating terrains make you pause and rethink every shot. I often recall my younger days, how important it was to adapt and improvise, and this course embodies that philosophy.
The par-3s here? Simply spectacular! Standing on the 3rd and 7th tees, with the vast ocean stretching out before you, the feeling is humbling. Golf, in moments like these, becomes more than just a game. It's a spiritual experience.
The greens roll true, and every bunker, be it fairway or greenside, serves a purpose. The fairways, lush and vibrant, remind me of the emerald courses in the British Isles, yet with the unique Hawaiian touch.
The aloha spirit is alive and well at Makai, ensuring that every golfer feels welcomed and cherished. The practice areas are top-notch, aiding in warming up the muscles and preparing the mind.
If I had a word of advice: respect the wind. Much like the gusts at the Open Championships, the winds at Makai can be both friend and foe. They add an element of unpredictability, challenging even the most seasoned players. The last piece of advice is to avoid using those skateboard-like motorized caddy vehicles. It requires a lot of body contortion to steer it around the course which leaves you exhausted for your next shot.
Makai Golf Course is not just a test of golf but a celebration of nature's beauty. To play here is to dance with the ocean, to duel with the winds, and to immerse oneself in the serenity of Kauai. I wholeheartedly recommend every avid golfer to experience the magic of Makai. It's a round you'll...
Read morePlayed the new disc golf course last Wednesday (they call it Princeville Mauka Disc Golf Course) and it was amazing. A par 63 set up that will have you throwing all different kinds of shots to navigate. The course runs along 9 holes of the club's "Woods" course, but I only ran into one set of ball golfers throughout my entire round. They have both a long and short tee set up. Currently no permanent pads, but they are planning on adding them at some point. They do have small red markers to mark the tees, but I would highly recommend downloading the UDisc app to help navigate the course. The staff is very friendly and eager for people to get out to check out the disc golf course. Tom (the head golf pro) advised me about the UDisc app I mentioned above as well as driving me and my wife right to the first tee. Overall, a great way to play disc golf while seeing some amazing views of Hawaii. I'm hoping to make it...
Read moreWhile staying at the Hanalei Bay Resort, we won two free tickets to the Makai Golfcourse Sunset Tour. Basically this is a nose-to-tail golf cart tour around the course during sunset. I think it costx $50 per person at full price. It really is a spectacular view!
Only because it was funny, I have to tell you that they really hyped us up about the "plumeria forest"... which was sadly 5 plumeria trees with barely any blossoms at all. Haha!
However, the ocean viewpoints were definitely worth the value! It is an amazing opportunity to see the best sunset...great photo taking opportunities, and quite romantic. This is a very low impact activity for any age group. The golf carts are quite nice, and include monitors with GPS systems too.
As you approach some of the cliffs, you also get a great viewpoint of...
