This Park is the only dog park in Las Cruces. It has two areas, the first is the larger area that is for larger dogs, be medium dogs, small dogs, aggressive and noon aggressive dogs alike. The smaller area is for dogs with special needs.
As others have noticed the trees are few and far between, there is not allot of shade (it's in the desert after all).
Most people who run their dogs here have awesome experiences, but as with all public amenities there are always people and groups who don't follow the rules or don't respect others.
I personally don't take my dogs here any longer. I have one dog who no matter the time of day or time spent here, cannot walk after playing in this park.
When I inquired about the chemical smell exuding from the park especially for the week following each and every third Thursday of the month, I was told that they only used water to disinfect and clean it. When I asked why the park had to close for drying for 4-6 hours everyone they clean it, and how are they using water to disinfect the park? I was meet by allot of resistance and out and out deceit by the parks manager. The park is run by the parks and recreation department. The park sits behind the handball, racquetball and basketball building at Meerscheit rec center. It sits between the roller derby park and the police academy training building across from the softball and baseball fields.
Great park if your dog is not timid or shy, likes to play with other dogs. Remembering of course some owners may or may not be invested in assuring that their animals play correctly and are not aggressive towards your dog. Good place to go if you absolutely need an enclosed area for your dog to play and run and be socialized.
Remember to clean up after your pet. That means you actually have to watch your own dog.
I now prefer other city parks to run and enjoy my dog on...
Read moreI have mixed feelings about this dog park in general. I am a visitor to Las Cruces for three months. I have been to this dog park and had very pleasant experiences, and I have been when it has been pretty awful.
Usually what makes it awful is owner’s not paying attention to their dogs, or seeing their dog’s poor behavior and not intervening. On two different occasions, a small dog (looked like a chihuahua) was in the park and would come to the gate and bark at my dogs as soon as we exited our vehicle. It was in a very guarding/aggressive manner. This barking would then rile up all the other dogs in the park who would rush the gate as I would try to come in with my dogs. The owners did not care on either occasion. The first time I walked my dogs around until they were very calm and still entered the park though almost every dog was at the gate. Today, I only had my one dog with me and just decided to leave rather than subject her to entering the park under those circumstances.
A good dog park will have separate areas for big dogs and small dogs. My experience at this park has been that some owners of small dogs are not watching their dogs or calling them, even if they are being aggressive. Yet, if my 70 lb dog goes into the park and corrects their small dog for being aggressive, it would likely be seen that my dog is the problem.
On the good days my dogs loved coming to this park and enjoyed playing with other pets! In my experience you can get a feeling within the first 10 minutes or so on whether or not it will be a good, safe environment. I recommend assessing before taking your dog into the park and leaving if it seems like the owners aren’t paying attention. My dog is very sweet and I want her to stay that way. Putting her in a situation where other owners are not watching or caring how their dogs act is a good way to make her...
Read morePET OWNERS BEWARE OF LC DOG PARK!! Sadly, while taking my dogs to the Las Cruces dog park yesterday, one of my dogs, a ten pound shih tzu named Zoe, was brutally attacked by two big dogs that belong to the same owner within minutes of entering the park. We had to immediately rush her to an emergency pet clinic in El Paso where she currently remains in critical condition. She is suffering from severe head trauma, including multiple puncture wounds and a skull fracture. We have reached out to the owners of the two dogs that mauled my poor baby and they are not stepping up and taking responsibility for the brutal attack like any good pet owner would. They seem truly unbothered by the terror their dogs have caused to not only my dog, but my entire family. Unfortunately, these ignorant and irresponsible dog owners will return to the dog park with their dogs and let them maul another dog carefree. While dealing with this tragedy and learning new information, I wanted to spread the word to other dog owners who might be unaware that the dog park is not regulated by animal control or the city whatsoever. Your dog can get murdered by another dog and you will not receive any assistance in dealing with the matter as it is a civil case at that point. Please be warned by our story and keep your loved pets safe by avoiding...
