I'm giving Dr. Liu a two-star review, as opposed to a one-star review, because I felt that his pre-partum care was adequate. His office was responsive and his staff, who I mostly interacted with, was very friendly and made me feel comfortable. The reason I am giving such a low rating is because on the day of my delivery I was very, very heavily pressured into delivering my baby via cesarean section. I specified in my birth plan to Dr. Liu that I wanted to deliver vaginally unless contraindicated (unless there was threat of harm or death to me or my son). On the day of my delivery I was only given three hours to push. At the end of those three hours I told the nurse I could push more, but she said I was not progressing (I was not dilating and the baby was not descending). The reason I was progressing slowly is because the nurse gave me pitocin to induce contractions, which I responded poorly to. I had tetanic (prolonged and forceful contractions), which needed to be counteracted with another drug, terbutaline, to slow the contractions. Due to giving me a drug which force-stopped my contractions I was not progressing and the doctor then tried to intimidate me into getting a C-section, which I specified in my birth plan I did not want. Not only are C-sections very difficult to heal from, they can greatly negatively impact bonding and breastfeeding of mother and infant. Unless it was emergent I did not want a C-section. Dr. Liu told me that if I did not get a C-section that, "your baby could die". I asked him what led him to say that. He stated, your baby is macrosomic and could have shoulder dystocia (baby's shoulder gets stuck on the pubic bone and unable to descend vaginal canal). When I asked follow up questions he stated, "I'm the doctor. You tell me what to do if you know more." (Very arrogant and insensitive to someone lying in a hospital bed delivering her first baby. I have the right to inquire further, it is my body, after all.) Macrosomia is a large baby, 8.8 lb or greater. My baby's weight was approximated at 7.8 lb via ultrasound, he actually only weighed 7.5 lb on delivery; not even close to macrosomic. Not only that, but the nurse attempted to exaggerate the fetal heart readings (which I know how to interpret). I feel it is unethical to tell a patient in such a vulnerable position that her baby may die when there is absolutely no evidence of that. The fact is, vaginal births are lengthy, inconvenient for the doctor and nursing staff, and less predictable than a surgical procedure such as a C-section. Also, the hospital profits financially from C-sections because they are able to bill insurance for a higher amount, and free up a delivery room for the next mother, hence delivering more babies. But that does not mean that I should be misled and intimidated into a procedure that I find frightening. I asked Dr. Liu, "Is the C-section emergent for me or my baby?" He is not allowed to say yes to that question if the answer is not a clear Yes. He would not give me a straight answer. If you do not want to deliver via C-section and you want to have your birth plan respected and to be heard and treated with dignity I would suggest looking into a different doctor. By the way, I did end up delivering vaginally and had a healthy 7.5 lb baby boy, who was not macrosomic, nor was there shoulder dystocia. And Dr. Liu did not show up in time to give me an episiotomy, so I tore. Stage 2 peritoneal laceration which took 3 weeks to heal. Edit: It has been 5 years since writing this review and I stand by every word of it. Never felt less heard or respected when dealing with a healthcare provider as I did when dealing with Dr. Liu. I only see women OB/GYNs now. Edit: It's been 7 years. Still stand by every word of this review. Never met a more...
Read moreI have been seeing Dr. Lui for 5 years or so and it's sad for me to leave a bad review for his practice because I believe he is a good doctor who pays attention to my needs as a patient but I have never once had a good experience with his front office staff. Either the staff is too busy or uncaring to their duties but every time I am in the office there is a billing issue or insurance issue and the staff seems unaware of patient files or situations. There could be a lack of communication between staff members, I'm not sure but please be aware that the front office staff is not always sure what is going on with your appointment or insurance. My last visit to see Dr Lui for my annual, I was told I was being billed for a no show for an appointment which was scheduled and canceled earlier this year. In regards to that canceled appointment, I had called two days before my appointment to ask the front office if my insurance was eligible because if it wasn't I didn't want to pay for my visit out of pocket, the office didn't get back to me until the day before my appointment to let me know I was not yet eligible so I needed to rescheduled my appointment at a later time when I would be eligible, I was never informed that there was going to be a cancelation fee of $25 for canceling my appointment less than 24 hrs before my scheduled appointment. My thought though is why would I be charged if I had called to check with the office beforehand? Also if my insurance is ineligible why is it not being verified sooner and why is the front office waiting to let me know less than 24 hours before my appointment hence making it impossible to cancel without a fee charged. I pay for health insurance so of course I want to be able to use my health benefits for my visit instead of paying for it out of pocket. On another note I was never informed on the 5 phone calls I received from the office after that, that I even had a balance since beginning of may and my appointment is now in late June. There was no invoice or bill sent to me or notification. So as a patient after receiving 5 calls from the office and communicating with them about my insurance and making sure the front office has the information needed to verify my insurance and eligibility it would be surprising to hear that I have a balance. To add to that experience I had, I was told that it's my responsibility to know my insurance eligibility, I agree, that's why I call the office and my insurance to double check to see if my insurance is eligible. There's a lack of professionalism and accountability in making that statement to a patient. As the patient I felt that I was doing my job in calling the office to make sure my insurance was eligible and calling my insurance to find out as well days before my appointment. It's scary as a patient to hear one thing from your insurance company and another from your doctor's office. Who are you suppose to believe? As a patient I should be able to call the office I'm visiting to get clarity. I strongly feel that there's a lack of communication between the Doctor, staff, patient and or insurance. Moving forwarded I have asked Dr. Lui to refer me to another gyno/ob he respects because I no longer feel comfortable or feel that I should struggle with something as simple as an annual visit. If you don't mind being treated unprofessionally by the front office staff than Dr Lui is a great doctor but after so many years I have sadly decided to move on to...
Read moreDONâT TRUST THEM AND GET THE NAME OF EVERY PERSON YOU TALK TO. I would give negative stars if I could. I had an appointment today, I was not a first time patient, I called beforehand to ask about pricing specifically for a procedure/product about a specific brand. I was always very specific about what brand I wanted to begin with. When I made the appointment they told me it would be $110 for the consultation and $470 for the procedure/product (specifically asked if that was the total for everything they said yes). Got to my appointment (I donât have insurance I knew I was going to pay out of pocket) they made me pay before being seen (last time they did not make me pay beforehand). Paid the $110 then waited some more. Did not talk to Dr Liu at all for the $110 that I paid, spoke to someone else, she told me it will be about $1000 for the product I explained that someone on the phone told me $470 and how I specifically asked for full pricing beforehand on the phone and I asked why was I told something completely different on the phone? She then said she would be back with accurate pricing. She did not come back. She instead sent the manager (she didnât tell me her name) she told me it would be $1000 for the product and $350 for the procedure, she got defensive when I explained the same thing to her. Then told me multiple unprofessional excuses as to why that happened, she told me the lady I talked to on the phone probably grabbed the wrong patientâs folder and thatâs why she gave me wrong pricing etc. Very unprofessional excuse how does that even happen in a doctorâs office? Mistakes happen but why would she tell me things like that. She told me more excuses like that. Then ended it with âso are you going to get it so I can check if we have it in stock yes or no? I need to know now.â They didnât offer any type of apology never said sorry once. Unprofessional, unorganized, and terrible communication within the staff. I called back to ask for a refund for such a bad experience. I spoke to Angelina who is the assistant admin manager. She refused to give me a refund and kept making excuses as to why they couldnât give me a refund. She said that the point of the consultation was to go over pricing and how the front office told me the procedure price and the point of the consultation was to tell me the total price but all the prices each one told me were all very different. I spoke to Gisele who was the first person I spoke to, then spoke to Michelle the Manager, then called and spoke to the assistant admin manager Angelina (she told me the names of the other two ladies) who then told me âthereâs nothing more we can do for you, you already had the bad experience.â The reason they insisted on refusing to give me my refund was because I spoke to Gisele who is a physician, I wouldnât have bothered to make the appointment if I knew the experience was going to be this bad. The money or price was not the problem but how am I supposed to trust a doctorâs office with any part of my body if the communication, professionalism, and trustworthiness is this bad. I suggest you go to a different office.
The only reason I went to them once before was because they had the soonest availability (now I see why) and at least that time I paid for the service I wanted with the Dr. I wish I wouldâve believed the negative reviews...
