The Most Overrated Museum in Salt Lake City (A Heads-Up Post)

Our family went on a Wednesday during spring break. Such a bad idea. It was slammed. So many parents letting their kids just act however and hog everything. Be prepared to actually pay attention to your kid(s) because other kids are rude and just yank things from your kid. That’s not why I gave it 3 stars though. The museum can’t help how kids act. I think with the amount of people touching the glass and other things that they would have WAY more sanitize stations around. That REALLY bothered me and I forgot to bring my own. Make sure you and your kids use the restroom first because it’s one way in and one way out. We had to stop half way though then walk around again for us to start where we left off. The doorways are small especially for a family oriented place. They didn’t think of placements for strollers and other families to walk through together. They have time slots when you purchase but when you get there they said it didn’t even matter. So why bother have it that way if your not going to monitor the amount of people in the building. There were SO MANY people! A lot of people stood in the way of really enjoying the museum. Next time go during the week during school hours. Cafe was nice! Actually had food you can get not just snacks. Sad to know the Dino bones statues are plastic not real. I thought it would have been real. I’ve never been so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Still worth the money to see how big the creatures were and all the water/underwater animals were. That was my favorite part.

OVERVIEW - 4.0 Came here as a spur of the moment thought. We'd seen the displays a few weeks ago, when we saw a movie at the Mammoth Screen from the Megaplex Movie Theater next store. LOCATION - 3 Easily seen from the freeway, but can be a little complicated to get to without the insight of a local or Google Maps. PRICE - 2 I honestly did not care for the price, and in fact I think this was the only negative part of our visit. Each adult is $15 and per child is $8. So with tax in the end we paid $42 for three. They have all kinds of "special" prices for this and that, season passes and whatnot, all way overpriced. I was told Tuesdays in August it is only $2 per person. We'll come back then. PRODUCT/SERVICE - 5 The fossils and displays were set up amazingly. My daughter was thoroughly entertained, which is saying quite a bit, as she has such a short attention span. I would have liked to spend more time reading about each of the artifacts, but I guess in August I will take more time. POINTERS/PERKS - 5 Come in August on a Tuesday when it is $2 per person, unless you want to make some financial sacrifices. They have several interactive activities for children, which is great! EMPLOYEES - 5 The employees were so friendly and patient with our several questions at the front desk.

What a fantastic experience at the Museum! The layout of the museum makes it super easy to navigate and enjoy all the exhibits, even without a map to show you where to go. As for exhibits, there is a great blend between models and actual fossil specimens. There is everything from tiny little sea fossils to enormous dinosaur models and everything in between. There is a little kids interactive zone where they can take plastic skeletons and put them into a model of a dig site, and when we arrived there were 2 employees showing hands on shells, starfish and fossils which was a great addition. At the end of the museum loop, there is a pair of sand filled kids areas where they can use a variety of tools to dig up the fossils underneath. Sadly there is nowhere to dust off after the activity, but it’s a great area for them to enjoy what they just saw in the museum. As for other things in the museum that aren’t the actual exhibit, there was a cafe that was sadly closed, a decent sized gift shop and then up stairs there is a 3D theatre that is around $6 a show for members. Overall this is a great museum to have local and has a wide variety of artefacts and fossils to enjoy for kids and adults too. We loved our visit!

I took my family to the Museum of Ancient Life over the weekend and we had a great time. Passes are a little costly, $20 for adults and a minor discount down to $15 for the kids. The kids price seemed a bit high, but I'm sure it is to encourage you to buy annual passes. The first exhibit on water sheds had me worried, it was pretty ghetto, but it stopped up quickly from there. There are some great exhibits discussing the local quarry where they are finding most of the bones and there are plenty of dinosaur fossil exhibits to keep my dino obsessed son very happy, especially when he got to see a real paleontologist working to extract new fossils. Outside of the exhibits, the gift shop ead nice, but lacking. First, they were paying church music, which seems a bit odd for a museum, it felt like I was in a church bookstore or visitors center. Second, the souvenirs are a bit lacking. Mostly cheap toys, stuffed animals and geodes. Very little having to do with the museum and not ...many higher end souvenirs, I really wasn't impressed. All in all, it is a bit on the pricey side and the gift shop is just ok, but the exhibits are pretty solid.
