This tiny building was filled with history! We didn't think we'd end up "in jail" when we took a drive around town to see the sights. : ) It's a quick, self guided tour-- less than 30 minutes from entering and leaving. While it is free to visit, we did leave a few dollars in the contribution bucket, but not required. I learned some interesting facts about prisoners back in the day of segregation. Great short stop during your visit to Leonardtown. There are stairs and of course, no elevator. Loved how the old wood creaked and cracked under foot. Rich in history. Worth the quick visit. Enjoyed writing our name in the antiquated guest book.

Free museum self guided tour. Will probably only take 30 minutes to an hour, tops. Staff are there to assist if you have any questions. Small gift shop and pamphlets with information about the town and surrounding areas. Really can’t complain for a free tour! (As an aside - you will see a lot of photos in these comments of the posters/plaques/inside the jail - avoid these if you want to be surprised!)

Guy there was really friendly and knowledge. A lot of history here including the cannon in front. It's crazy to think of how many prisoners they stuffed into the cells when population grew. The Mill Dyer's Rock is located near the hall (5 min walk across the parking lot). Worth it to go see. Admission is free.

Went in expecting history and inspiration. Left wondering if I’d just toured someone’s attic and accidentally got charged for it.

First off, the “Old Jail” part? Yeah, it’s old. It also smells like it gave up in 1865. A few dusty rooms, a couple mannequins that look like they’re plotting something, and a tour guide who seemed genuinely shocked anyone showed up.

The Underground Railroad exhibit? Blink and you’ll miss it — literally. It’s about the size of a closet, with some laminated papers and a vibe that says, “We did our best... probably.”

The Visitor Center part is just a guy behind a counter surrounded by brochures, who gave me directions to a coffee shop like he’d been waiting his whole life to do it.

Learned more about my own boredom tolerance than Maryland’s history. If your GPS tries to take you here, tell it you’ve made peace with...

The museum seems to be focused on lynching and bullying of poor Moll Dyer. A large historical marker outside the jail gives a history of a lynching that took place in Leonardtown over a hundred years ago. That's not the legacy of this wonderful and beautiful town I would like to see as emphasised in our history. Once inside jail Moll Dyer, a supposed witch who in the 17th century, becomes the victim of bullying. As the legend goes she was chased from her home based on the superstitions of the local people. This was not uncommon for that time. That was then and this is now. I would hope the people who decide what content is presented to the public as an accurate history of leonardtown would also present the positive aspects of Leonardtown and her roles in the growth our community, state...

Museum & visitor services no longer with same provider. Museum displays nearly empty. Two females were "working" there. Both were playing on their phones. When I asked what was in town or in area, both said they didn't know because they didn't live there. They thought there might be a restaurant. I was incredulous & asked "You mean you are paid to work at the visitor center, are surrounded by literature about the area & can't tell me anything?" I suggested they look at the literature instead of playing on their phones. I was asked to leave because my comment was rude. When did asking someone to meet the minimum job requirement count as rude? There, Thursday May...
